Specifically, on the reverse, the 4 & 8 look wrong, the serifs on the letters look extended. Additionally, the King's mouth on the obverse looks different. What do you guys think? I wanted to get additional opinions before contacting the seller. I recognize the seller (I don't know him, but recognize him from shows, etc.).....he's a young guy trying to establish himself and seems like a straight shooter, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here...

Skip, totally on your side here.
I have never seen a 4 like that in a 1948 dollar.
just looked at my considerable images of graded and fake 1948s and not one looks like that.
Some months back I would have done a comparism with at least 2 known authentic coins next to it.
But guess what? Nobody seriously cares. And some sellers do not want to know.
So, I have given up wasting my time.

I may be wrong but, It actually looks ok to me too. I looked at a few ebay photos of the '48 and I can't see any difference in the date.  |

Looks ok to me. I've only handled one in person, i.e. no expert, but have looked at hundreds of images, particularly on ha.com. I'd say the appearance of the 4 may be an "optical illusion", and I don't see any problem with the lips. Look up numerous high-quality ha.com images and see what you think.

looks ok, however notice the letters seem like they have a cameo look, and remember that 1926 that was sold on ebay had that effect too! I know that this is not a mint state coin, which means no cameo obvously, but you know what I mean a blasted look. It looks fine to me, this seller is experienced in addition. |

That rust on obverse and scratches makes me wonder what it looked like before cleaning. I would like to have one in my set, but prefer nicer w/o the extra damage.

I was comparing it to both my own (in hand) and other higher res pics elsewhere. I'm very suspect, especially about the 4 & 8, which is what caught my attention in the first place. Granted, seller's pics aren't high res, but the characteristics stand out (to me, anyway). Wish I had the skills to prepare a single side-by-side comparative image, noting the differences, but....

I checked a 48 I have that was a cross grade ICCS/PCGS and the 4 is same as in this pic, so it looks same to me. The 7 day return policy is some comfort to a buyer

When I buy a high value coin, I make sure it was slabbed. This removes any doubt about authenticity .

Jimmy D: Wish you were right, but that is not necessarily always correct. If you buy slabbed coins done by a top TPG your chances of the coin being authentic are a lot better than from a "not so much" recognized TPG.

I should have been more specific.
The only slabbed coins I buy from are CCCS & ICCS in Canada
and NGC & PCGS in USA. I'm sure there may be other reliable graders but these are the ones I use.

Wasn't there a long time ago a whole bunch of fake '48's that came out of either Europe or somewhere in the middle east (in my head I'm thinking Turkey)
I know we have had a lot of fakes come from China these days and have learnt some of the markers.. but does anyone have any pics of those old fake '48's? Are the markers known? Could this be one of them?

the counterfeits were from '45-48 and made out of Lebanon in the '70's..... Sorry my facts were a bit off ... 13 concussions will do that to you!

The Lebanese fakes that I have seen pictures of appear to be of quite high quality.
