I had found this Lincoln Cent while looking through Wheat pennies and separating by Mint mark. The Mint mark is indistinguishable and don't know if this was an error or if this was damaged. Thoughts? I had taken two different photos with 2 types of lighting, both aren't helpful. Looks like a 'D' and an 'S' combined?

A closer image would be more helpful. Here is an image of one of the 1956-D OMs'

Were these from the dies that came from San Francisco mint that the workers never filed the S off of?

I think they tried to. But CONECA claims the one I posted is a D/D. So not all see them exactly the same.

Does your DVD include how you take your images, i.e. what photographic techniques you use.

No, it doesn't. Probably something I should work on a future DVD? But I've got images of how my setup works. I've posted them several times already. On Coppercoins forum, I show how I edit images with photoshop and how it is done. Seems like a short idea for a DVD though. More of a post as needed thing at this point.

Take your time. Equipment is very helpful, but even having the best doesn't always guarantee great images. A good image is the result of hundreds of failed ones in the past. So keep trying. Keep what works for your images, and try to keep improving. Sometimes something done in a different way can give you results that you want.

Thanks for the earlier response COOP. I'll see if I can find it in the forums.

I searched it for you. Here are the links with the images: I thought it would be easier to have it on my word page, so now I can copy/paste without having to look it up again.

Here is a better picture. Looking at this pic it appears to be a squished 'D' mint mark. Does anyone agree? Not sure exactly how you would compress in such a small area ... is this common?

You realize we have an entire forum dedicated to coin photography, right?

Looks like coin wrapper damage to your coin. Note the area east of the 5. Note how it is parallel to the rim. Definite sign for coin wrapper or vending machine damage as the coin moves as the handle was turned. But it is for sure damaged.
