Poll Question
Hello, I currently keep the majority of my collection in 2x2's in a binder. Although very utilitarian... it leaves something to be desired aesthetically. I like the presentation of Dansco's #7070 & Intercept Shield's type set collection albums. Unfortunately I've ran into a snag. The 7070 is out if print & I'd much rather spend the inflated retail price of $80 on a sweet coin. On the other hand Intercept Shield offers a $30 alternative, but also has a production design flaw with holes to small for the braided hair large cent & 20 cent coins. I suppose I could always get a blank Dansco & add the 7070 pages separately.
What are my options? Is their an alternative? Thanks!

This is tough. I bought a beat up 7070 which is nice, although a fresh out of the box one would be better. Its a nice album but very over prices due to lack of supply. I would either try to piece together a blank Dansco, or buy a 7070. Try to look for one used, but not beat up and maybe save some money there.
I wouldn't mind having them in 2x2's though, especially if it saved me 80 or so dollars. I didn't vote if you were wondering.

Tough indeed. The market seems to be extremely limited.

Littleton has 19th and 20th century type set albums. You could also use plastic 2x2 snap lock holders and pages from lighthouse that are made for them. That looks pretty nice and you can pop the holder out to examine a single coin more closely. Like so:

This was my dilemma in wanting to start a type set.Not wanting to pony up 60+dollars for a dansco. Then I went to a local coin show in Clifton,NJ. Found a brand new dansco 7070 W/ the gold page for 30 dollars! I couldn't get my money out of my pocket fast enough! Try some local shops and coin shows if you can! If not patience is a virtue and wait. I was about to buy a brand new one for 120 but couldn't do it. Long behold 1 month later I found that gem and have been slowly filling it up over the passed month. !

My heart says go with the Dansco, but supposedly the Intercept Shield now comes with a replacement page to fix the hole size errors ( at least when bought from Wizard).

I received an email today from a gentleman offering to ship me a 7070 w/6 pages for $50 flat. I'd be lieing if I said I'm not seriously considering the offer. Slightly used, but $30 less than I've been able to find it for anywhere else. Dansco store swears it's temporarily unavailable because it's being updated. Would love to see these back on the market.
Poll is neck & neck. Quite a few Interceptor fans out there! I think there's a few more holes in those albums. If I'm not mistaken, 7070 goes to 2008 & interceptor to 2009?

I would snatch that up. As long as you are sure it's in decent shape, you won't find it much cheaper, especially with the 6th page.

Look into other manufacturers. Such as Littleton, Whitman, etc.

Quote: Spend the $50 and start filling it up I'd love to! Just having difficulty thinking of the beautiful Half Cent I could get in lieu...or a nice down payment on a Trade dollar. I'm not complaining... I could certainly be faced with harsher conundrums than debating between albums & coins! LOL. Has anyone tried resizing the hole in the Intercept Shield? I've seen some photographs of others that have managed to cram the braided hair cent into them... but the album hole looked kinda rough after. Maybe a file or some fine grit sand paper? Whitman also is a good option Carl... but I'm concerned that some of the coins I've seen sit in Whitman's for a few years looked like ship wreck coins afterwords. Has the quality increased in the past decade? (Sorry I'm full of questions) If I do spring for the (beautifully crafted) Dansco I just know the re-release is sure to be issued the very next day. Ha!

I could certainly be faced with harsher conundrums than debating between albums & coins! LOL. Also my problem with buying Dansco albums - my mind keeps telling me the cardboard and plastic are not worth the actual piece of numismatic history I could own instead. And I must be considered cheap by some on the forum, b/c I have not bought on new (nor likely will I ever). I do own some nice used Danscos bought at coin shows for 5.00 each. When I do buy albums, they are the Coin Collector albums from Wizard Coin Supply. Unfortunately they do not have a type coin album (or I would own one). At present I have opted for the 2X2 method until the new Dansco comes out (and others sell off their old ones for cheap!), or I find a good deal on one form another company. After I get the sets finished I want to, then I might look into making a uniform set of albums also. I know a uniform set of albums also looks very nice nice. Or maybe by then someone on CCF will take it upon themselves to making our own CCF albums If I was not busy with a book, I might look into it myself. I think a good business could be built this way by starting small and growing.

Just an update. I listened to you guys & went with the Dansco 7070. Got one with an updated last page that includes sacagawea, State Quarter hole & a few others. I'll post an image when I get home Final Price:$20.00 @ the LCS! I'm glad I waited p.s. One of the pages is coming apart where the plastic goes in. What can I use to repair that's safe? Thanks for your opinions all.

Congratulations on the purchase! Maybe you can fix it with a bit of double-sided Scotch tape or similar?

I've repaired pages with my kid's glue stick before, just use a small dab and be careful of glueing the plastic slide.
