Quote: Jay Leno used to do a similar bit. But keep in mind it is edited for entertainment and they certainly make sure to show you the worst answers only. There was a bit they did on Jon Stewart where they tried to do the opposite and it actually took them a while to find someone who didn't know the answers. Of course that may have been edited too.

Boliver says: I do not think Jay Leno had much of an agenda maybe not so much for Jon Stewart.
Happened to me at Taco Bell last week. Cashier had never seen them before (he told me when I gave them to him) and he went and showed them to his manager to make sure he could use them. I was laughing the whole time because I could see him through the drive through window.
I recall reading an article where someone had an old $50 bill and tried to deposit at a bank and they called police! Thought fake. anyway, I think with all the different $1.00 coins and really low usage, I can see how those may have issues. I don't even recognize them all.
I've given up attempting to use those baby sized Dollar coins. Also, $2 bills. Thinking of doing the same with Half Dollars. Just tired of arguing about what they are. Where I live it would be easier to use Peso's.
Quote: I know this because I researched into a dispute a disgruntled person had with a business owner I was friends with. The customer insisted he take payment for a $100 item in pennies...yes $100 worth of pennies and the customer angrily said that he HAD to take the coins as payment.
Here's how this conversation would go if the clerk collected coins:
Customer: Here's my payment - $100 in pennies - what do you think of that? Clerk: Where did you get all these? Customer: Ha - take that! Wait - what? Clerk: Where did you get the pennies? Customer: My grandma had them in a box. And you have to take them! Haha! Clerk: Really? Ok. Customer: Didn't you hear me? You have to take them! Clerk: I'll take them. Here - let me help you with those! Customer: Yeah, well, I made my point. Clerk: Yes sir, you sure did. Umm - do you have any more? I'll buy them from you...
Quote: Next time, bring in $2 notes. I absolutely LOVE spending them, it's a conversation piece every single time. They really great for restaurant tips, the servers really think they got some special!
With you on this. I also like to use Ikes for tips. In a Chinese restaurant I frequent, I've been known to leave an appropriate tip and a Nationalist Chinese coin or maybe a QEII Hong Kong dollar. They're readily available for next to nothing in the coin shop's junk/bargain bin but the servers seem to think getting one is pretty neat.
Quote: Of course, one should reasonably expect that money is taught at home, just like telling time...at least that's how I was brought up...I asked my dad what a half dollar was, not my boss,
But even at home would you expect them to teach you about all the forms of money that are seldom if ever encountered? When you folks taught you about nickels did they pull out a bunch of Shield nickels or just Jefferson nickels? It has been over 45 years since Buffalo nickels have been commonly encountered in circulation, would you expect cashiers to be trained to recognize them just in case one floats in every five to ten years? Do you have a supply of pre-1996 currency to teach your kids or grandkids what the old small size portrait currency looks like just in case they run across some? Sure the small size dollars are "current" but most people have not run into them or at least haven't since the Washington dollar made a big splash in 2007 or the Sac in 2000. So your typical cashier 10 years old or 3 years old when these were big news. And Kennedys and Ikes haven't been in "common" circulation since before they were born.

Certainly sir would you kindly wait over there while I take care of the rest of these customers and then we'll get them counted.
A little later, OK you understand this will take a while and we can't credit you with the payment until they are counted. Now 1......2......3......4......5 After the "customer" has been cooling his heels for three hours, I'm afraid your $1.48 short. Do you want me to count them again?
I heard a guy telling how he went to McDonald's and got some change for his purchase but what were supposed to be quarters were actually SBA dollars. He went and gave a $1 bill and asked for more change and got 4 SBA dollars. He kept on doing that until they ran out. He said "those kids these days don't know what their doing" or something like that.
BadThad....I love the idea of spending $2 notes as well, but in my local market, all the "gentleman's clubs" make change with $2 notes...so if you ever use one in a transaction, everyone teases you that you were at "the club" last night... LOL
