I have only asked for coins a couple of times, but got turned down. Finally, yesterday, I was in a different bank, and asked if they had any "weird" coins laying around. The teller gave me two Kennedy halves (1996 and 71) 8 brand new Lincoln dollars and a 1979 dollar coin.

Not exactly a bag full of Franklin halves, but it was nice to get something to make my coin album a little bit heavier!

Try gas stations... The one next to my house always has coins to trade for dollar bills.... Ever since I told them I collect coins so I look at the change I receive back, the lady asked if I wanted the coins instead of cash...

gas stations are good!
By the way, your 1979 dollar is called a Susan B. Anthony dollar, and the P mint mark comes with 2 rim varieties (wide and narrow, witch you should look for)

I ask at every bank I go into for coins such as half dollars and the larger dollar coins. I also, ask if they get any odd looking ones they want to get rid of. Used to do OK with this but today nothing for along time. It appears most banks today just have a way to get rid of all that stuff.

Thanks Wheat. I wasn't sure if that was SBA or not.

Edit* it's a D.

We ask every time we go in one. Very often we spend an afternoon going around doing just that at 7-11s, banks, gas stations etc.We have had multiple scores of Morgans, Peace, Frankies, Walkers etc.

I personally always check the "take a penny leave a penny" trays. Once I found a 1919 wheat in one, I have never stopped looking!

My greatest bank find is a... brand new 2014d Lincoln Cent. The banks in my area always somehow have brand new, fresh from the mint, coins in the teller tray, yet when I get a box, they're mixed.

The logic.

As I related in a recent post, a few months ago I asked a teller for some dollar and half-dollar coins. She produced a large handful of Ikes and two full rolls of JFKs.

When I got them home, I found seven of the halves and three of the Ikes were 40% silver.

I remember reading a story somewhere (here?) about a guy who asked for some "gold" dollars--meaning Sacawageas and Presidential coins--at the bank. The teller handed them out one by one, referring to the presidents by name and one particular coin as "some lady."

It turned out the "lady" was Liberty and the coin was a 19th century five-dollar gold piece that had gotten mixed in with the brass dollars. Probably worth around $800.

I ask every time I am at my bank. Usually I get a few Kennedys and a handful of golden dollars. Never hurts to ask.
