As I mentioned when this format was suggested: Things will get buried and, though nice to be able to come back to to see again, remain hidden in xxx pages of photos. A case in point: Rob Turner's (bosox's) outstanding eye candy of the highest 9/6 ever graded that some of us watched to see the comments. There's a couple stories behind that coin. Although Rob was tucked away in SoCal hard at work, the coin was spotten by 2 Canadian friends at a Toronto show. One of the 2, a huge Vicky variety collector was summoned to high-end Canadian dealer's table who noticed something strange about the coin, which he had purchased at an auction some months previous. The friend immediately told the dealer what he had (no one had noticed for years what it was) and told him a guesstimate of what it may be worth. The friend knew that it was, by far, the finest known. He told the dealer to take the coin out of his case, not to sell it, hold it and that a collector in California (known to the dealer)was going to be called to possibly purchase it. The second friend, also a dealer at the show, sent Rob an email while the first friend called by phone and told him what was there. Over the phone the next day, a deal was struck and Rob became the happy owner, buying an x-thousand dollar coin for $xxxx dollars sight unseen.
Lessons learned: 1) It pays to have friends that go to bourses 2) You can make a killing if you know your varieties 3) Make friends with dealers 4) Trends looks at bourse sales. Prior to this coin, the finest known and cert'd was an AU-50 and less than 6 others of any grade were known (and this same friend had had the first 2 cert'd by ICCS and put in Charlton's). The "friend" that ID'd this one had also ID'd one that a non-Large Cent collector had picked up on a whim and never knew what he had until the same "friend" told him what he remarkably had while over coffee at the Marriott and using the front window for light on the loupe. That second coin now resides in Western Canada under 62 plastic. As soon as Rob had the coin properly certified and noted as a 9/6, Trends then had the MS-64 Red column filled with the $7,000 price tag, but still lots of "no-coin" X's to the left of it in Trends until you get to the AU-50 column. Sometimes Trends is faster than you think.
5) When someone puts a photo on here that is REAL eye candy, other collectors should mention something, especially since is the finest known and also part of the highest ranked Registry set for PCGS. You need Bosox on this forum and he deserves all the accolades that befit him.

@ okiecoiner.... I really enjoyed the commentary in your last post. I love looking at all of the 1859's being posted, however, as you mentioned, we need to really appreciate some of the "stars". I enjoyed seeing bosox's 9/6 just as much as I enjoyed reading the back story on it. Excellent post!!

JDRMCB Yes, it is Haxby PC59-732 obv 73 + rev P12a. Besides the obvious 9. The repunched R of GRATIA and the die crack on leaf 12 are die defining markers. ed

Viper's coin on page 4 of this thread is indeed a new die and die pair. it is designated as a Haxby PC59-292 obv 29 paired with rev F4. The former F4 reverse got a name change to F4a to make room for the new discovery. Careful study of the obverse die cracks indicated that this new die was paired with obv 29 before the former F4 hence the change.
In other words as coins were produced obverse 29 was first paired with reverse E29 until it wore out or was retired, then it was paired with rev F4 until it wore out or was retired then finally was paired with rev F4a. It is always fun to make a new discovery, hopefully there are more to be made. ed
