Hi Everyone,

I went out the other day and got a couple rolls of the new Jefferson $1 coins and I see some of these coins have the top side of the writing on the rim facing the obverse side yet others the top side of the writing faces the reverse.

Do the new $1 coins have no standard on which direction the writing on the rim goes?

Thanks!

No standard. It's a 50/50 chance. Unfortunately people on ebay have made a KILLING making people believe otherwise

that is true, there is no set standard to which way this edge lettering should be facing on circulated coins as of yet, so as was said its a 50/50 chance on which way it is facing

I noticed it on the Washingtons. It's always been that way.

My understanding is that they are using a standard direction (lettering 'right side up' when the obverse is up) on proofs, but circulation strikes are random. Many collectors are considering the orientation of the edge lettering as 'varieties' and want to acquire both.

Personally, I'm saving up for an 1873 Trade dollar.

As noted, there is nothing special about the coins. I only replied because I wanted to welcome you. Please note that the folks on this website are very knowledgeable and love to answer questions that you may have if you can not find it in the archive. I hope you keep coming back!

Thanks everyone!
This helps a lot! I was thinking it was going to be 50/50 but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks again!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. I won't say anything about those new dollar coins since I dislike them.

Yes they do have a standard direction on the proofs, but I believe it is lettering upside down when the obverse is up.
