Another bump. Any collectors of Byzantines out there?

I found this one at an estate/yard sale just by asking if the guy had any coins. He handed me a tin box with a hand full of coins in it. I guess he was preoccupied with the deluge of buyers was too rushed; he said he'd sell the box to me for $ 10. I didn't even look in the tin box before buying it since I thought it was worth the chance. These coins were not even out on display for sale. He just went back and looked in a remote dresser drawer to retrieve them for me only. I promised him a finder's fee if I discovered anything decent. Here's what I found when I opened the tin box:

That is a great pick-up @mpmedia and thanks for posting! I see that it is dated 540/541 AD, which is awesome. However, we are still looking for a coin minted two decades later (560s). Only then we can continue moving this thread forward again.

Presumably it is only Justinian I that is going to help us here, or are there any other coins attributable to this decade?

Khusro I minted dated drachms from this period; years 29-38. I have two from him; 7 and maybe 4. So no help from me just yet.

@archeo1982, that is a perfect coin to post here as we are looking for coins of the decade of the 560s. At the risk of being a stickler for the rules, I refer you to the front page of this thread where @medieval included this rule: Quote: 4. The active decade changes at midnight (CCF time) once a coin has been posted with a date falling into the decade or an undated coin with a minting period of not more than 10 years starting in the active decade. I think that the dates for your Pentanummium is just outside the allowable range. We have overcome tough decades in the past and we will beat this one too!

@archeo1982, another interesting coin--thanks for posting. I don't see your coin in my copy of Sear, so I'm not sure about the attribution (and therefore the date of minting). If you have more information, please add that to this thread. However, I do have a coin which I think can move this thread along another decade. Please find below my Drachm from Khusru I. I don't love the somewhat new scratch across his nose, but otherwise am pretty happy with the condition of this coin. The mint is ART (Arthashir) and the regnal year is 33, which should correspond to 564 or 565 AD. I have it attributed as Goebl I/2. If all that is correct, then in two hours, we can go back to the decade of the 550s AD!

Ok, here is my coin from the decade of the 550s AD. It is another Drachm of Khusru I, this one dated 551 AD. It was minted in Guey and the attribution is Mitchiner 1050. Starting tomorrow, we can move back to the decade of the 540s! @mpmedia, that would be a perfect time to post your coin!

Great coin Albert--thanks for posting another coin of the 550s! I'll ask the mods to update the title to reflect the fact that we are looking for coins of the 540s. Until we get one of those, more coins from the 550s are welcome! Quote: Glad this thread is moving again. Me too. I think that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though--once we leave the Byzantines and get into the Roman era, I believe that we should be able to race through the decades faster.
