Generally speaking when roll hunting, anything 1958 or prior. This is mostly because 1958 was the last year of the LWC and thus a good stopping point before the big climb of mintages, and also that my old 1993 Black Book stated 1959 as the beginning of the "Coins of these dates are not purchased by dealers". That said, I recently sold coins from this era on ebay about six months ago for only 1.5x face value, and because of this I don't hunt too many nickels these days. I would keep all S-mints/proofs (not 1968-70 non-proof strikes), War, 1955-P, 1950-P and D, 1942-D, all 1938's, all 1939's, and of course any Buffaloes or earlier. The problem with hoarding these are the fact they aren't worth too much given their weight and since I feel one coin with the best quality is sufficient, has made me move on toward Dimes/Quarters/Halves (I still like searching pennies on occassion). I would rather take my 1.3 average of silver dimes per box over a 1.3 average of silver war nickels/buffaloes per box anyday, as I found a 1943 Mercury dime the last time I searched a box of Dimes.

Since this thread started, we stopped keeping the 1942d as it is not a low mintage (under 10 million) nickel. I realized from asking on another thread that the reason we found less of them was because we are not near the Denver mint, so we returned our extras to the wild.

So I read what Yelimsexa posted... is that the main reason to save those pre-1960 nickels? Is there any other reason for that date?
