I think that it is cleaned. I can't tell if it's real or not though.

Looks real. but definitely cleaned. the mint mark is just worn and scabby looking like the
rest of the coin. This is only my opinion.

I wouldn't open that can of worms that it is coins because it is a way to devalue it. Cleaning detection is hard, unless it is obvious but many think they can detect it. Many times there are things that cause a coin to look clean like it being carried in someone's pocket like people did with circulated coins or copper coins being left in the sun. Of course there are instances where it is obvious like systematic tool marks or a jewelery seller sends you coins that turned orange right before they sent them.

I wonder if it's been cleaned or just really worn and beat up. At this grade does it matter if it's been cleaned? I don't think so. I'm just playing devil's advocate.

You really need to take a magnified look at the mint mark. These coins are notorious for having the "s" soldered on after the fact. And some are very well done and some not so much. The build up of gunk around the mint mark looks like a sign of cleaning or it could be added in an attempt to hide the solder gap.
