A recent discovery of mine I thought you might like to see,not the prettiest denarius I've ever found but by far the most rare
Denarius of Caligula (properly Gaius), struck at Lyons*, AD 37-38, in honour of his deceased mother, Agrippina Senior.

* RIC I (1984) attributes the coin to the mint of Rome, but more recent numismatic opinion favours Lyons.Sear 1825

Very nice! When you say you 'found' this, do you mean metal detecting?

A very rare coin and one that has been widely copied. If this was a ground find than chances are that it's OK, If not I'd be a little skeptical about it. In any event it would be worth while to have it certified.

Another amazing metal detecting find that leaves your poor midwest USA metal detecting relatives green with envy!

How did you react when you knew what you'd found?

Hey Paul ,yes we're very lucky to have some great history here,I've found a lot of denarius over the yrs so I'm ashamed to say this one didn't overly excite me,mainly due to the condition,I'm saving all my excitement for when I unearth a gold one #128515;

I'm sorry if I sound a little blase about it,but the value of finds doesn't really come into it for me,obviously it's nice but not important,I gain most pleasure from finding items that I've never found before & specific things that are on my wish list of things to find.
20 years ago I would have been dancing all the way home with a find like that,but that's no longer the case( sad but true ).

Gooner - any chance you'd be willing to share some of your other finds? I'm in Canada, so we don't have the same MD opportunities as you, but I've thought about going over for one of these metal detecting holidays. I'm also a swiss citizen (by birth), so I've thought about trying my luck over there on some friends' land.

Yes sure Mark I will be posting more finds up,but I don't want to bombard the forum,but I will put pics up regularly.
Re.detecting holidays,I've heard some bad things about these ( planting finds etc) so just be careful,there are a several 3 day detecting rallies up and down the country,mainly in August/September which you might be able to to work out so that you get several days out,might be an option for you to consider.

Thanks pp - Metdet and I talked a bit over email - he does have some friends who run MD clubs. The UK sounds like a good place to go since they have fairly well developed rules about finds. I thought that Switzerland might be an interested place too because of the central location. I'm unsure of their rules though (I believe that if it's on private land, and you have the property owner's permission, then you're in the clear).

Did you at least get excited once you realised what it is?

Show some of those you got excited about.

Don't listen to 'pishpash', she can go metal detecting herself. Send it to someone overseas, I am sure there are a few who would give this coin a good home.
