how is it possible to tell if the whiskers are sharp or not?! I mean the 1966 1c coin - I heard about the subtle mintmarks from this forum a couple days ago, and was able to find the short spike on the 5c and the gap on the 20c, but have had no luck with the 1c. Even with a magnifying glass and scanned in at max resolution I cant tell - its too small!
G'day, I have a Macca's 3rd edition of 1995. He has photos of the three varieties at page 64, and below them, the three varieties of 2-cent for 1966. I don't know if these photos are in the later editions. Perhaps in Renniks ? What you're looking for is miniscule. The relative mintages were C-146m; M-238; and P-26. So, about 6% of coins will be P; and 36% will be type C.
thanks Peter, that was the site I was led to before. But even from the diagram http://members.optusnet.com.au/~iha...ure/1cmm.jpg you cant actually tell if the whiskers are sharp or not. I think I might need a microscope!
Place 2 coins next to each other and you will see the difference with a normal glass if youy have 2 different mintmarked coins. If they are the same take 1 away and place another coin there until you finally identify 2 different ones. Once you see the difference once it's easier from then on.
secretsquirrel Ive tried this but they look the same. Are you sure someones not just having us on! Yeah mate, this coin has sharp whiskers. Can anyone who has a better scanner than I do scan two images of them and prove that there really are sharper whiskers.
Nobody is having you on. If they look the same then they are from the same mint. I will see what I can do with pics but it wont be until at least next week sometime so maybe someone else will beat me to it.
