Well out my budget for the gold mask as well. If imagine most that but them are 6 figure salary earners. I'm certainly not.

i am sorry but if you can't see it without a high rez photo, or a loupe than it really shouldn't be an issue.. could you imagine buying a new car, and going over the paint job with a loupe, the car would never make it to your laneway, because it would never be good enough..

From other hand, I would prefer to have the law, defining for each category, due to which imperfections/defects the customer eligible return the item. Being obsessive for smallest stone-chips on the paint job of the hood and correcting them with the touch-pen, I "close eyes" on the almost non visible with naked eye imperfection of paint of the spoiler....and this is not the $100 coin |

I've been frustrated by these coins. Maybe I've just had bad luck. If the coin was something I was going to commute to work with then a couple of scratches wouldn't make me think twice. I've never noticed any issues with any of the other coins bought from the mint, so maybe my expectations were unrealistic, except as the price goes up I think I'd have to worry less about getting a flawed coin more than once. When I'm moved to buy something way out of my usual price range, described as (gold) "extensive hand-crafting and polishing", a "numismatic masterpiece of the highest order", and the anticipation grows, and I finally have a 'fresh' coin in my hands, then a collection of spots, or scratches, or dents, or nicks, or whatever, makes me feel a little disgusted. It's not bullion, it's a collectible. If I were to sell these coins today, I wouldn't expect someone else to pay me $359 or $3000 for a bunch of spots, or ridiculous scratches. If I consider the mint may be a bit care-free in their quality control, then it means it's at the expense of my time and effort and angst to find these coins in an acceptable, saleable condition. I should qualify all of this by saying 1) these are the most expensive coins I've ever purchased, 2) I am very picky and detail-obsessed, 3) very near-sighted (like having a built-in loupe!), and 4) I'm gonna throw 'a bit naive' in there too. Hoping to learn from some more experienced collectors. Is it just bad luck, or is it fair to call foul(ish)?

I agree that it is unacceptable that the moon masks set has imperfections. For the money I spent I expect to get coins that are as near to perfect as possible. Having said that I checked my set with a magnifier and noticed no marks of any kind.

Happy for you. Good to know there are some perfect sets out there. I'm sending one set back to the mint tomorrow, and speaking to a dealer about exchanging the gold. Three finishes, three coins, three hundred dollars... maybe third time's the charm?
