You have a coin from a VLDS die. Note how the devices look larger, but are not uniform and no spread from hub doubling. Here is a doubled die:

You can see the spread from the hub and the devices are enlarged slight larger. You coins' devices the "G" on GOD are flowing together because of the die wear. The 1983 nickel still used the multi hubbed dies yet. So you would see the doubling more even.

Ok I see what your saying with the uniformity of the devices. What a pain this learning curve for the double dies is. I've got Machine Doubling down and class 1, 2, 3, and 4 are obvious. But just trying to train my eyes to the rest of them . And how about those pictures I got my first begginer microscope that takes pics.;)
Rest in Peace

Your pics are great!

And I know just what you mean about the learning curve. Just when I think I know something -- it's back to school!

I need to get a microscope that takes pictures, like you say. What is a good beginner brand? I've got the uncirculated down, with a loop and phone, but the older brown coins, are more difficult, with the same lighting. Still working on that. But a scope would be nice

You should get a copy of the Cherry Pickers Guide. It tells about all 9 classes of die doubling. I to see a worn die not a doubled die.

I bought one of these a few months ago:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DigiMicro-2...em417f334b90

At the time it was $25. I have been pleased with it as one to start out with. There is a learning curve. Maybe I will move up to a better one later on, but for now I'll stay with this one. I figured that for $25 - why not?

That's basically what I did cause I was worried about spending too much and not liking it . They go up to hundreds of dollars. I got a handheld Celestron for $30 comes with the mount or you can hold it by hand . Small learning curve pretty simple use. I'm making my own filter now trying to cut down on the light reflection
