I finally had a chance to view a few Mercurys this weekend. They were selling for $280, in original US Mint packaging. Nice looking coins, but seemed so much smaller in person.

I will say, I too was unable to get my order from the U S Mint. I went to the secondary market and am Very Pleased, not about the price, The Finned coins are Beautiful. I too have read this topic and will say, To the Person who has a " mark " between the mint mark and the face, I have seen for years quote 'perfect " coins that without magnification , clearly the coin(s) are flawed, not a MS70 or a SP70....... Buy the coin, not the majority of the newer generations wanting nothing but a "perfect " slabbed coin......... Any Numismatist could easily detect flaws in more graded 70 coins then the average person would believe..... I mean no disrespect to anyone, I have seen this slab driven generation want what they want... I wish all the best, I also wish people would research and study the grading system and become more comfortable in their own judgement, instead of spending the extra $$$$$$$ to believe in this hype, fdoi, fs, also hyped bull, the grading companies are making more $$$$$$$ now than ever before.

My back order came in finally, one of them I am going to return, it had scratches around the chin and jaw area.

I notice on ebay they have a lot of these raised finned coins as error, but to me is just production flaws and too minor too called it error. I agree too many MS70 and SP70 flood the market.

Were the scratches notable without a magnifier? Do you have pictures? Thanks.

The dealer we bought our SP70 from sent one of his back to PCGS to try to get the so-called "error" attribute onto the label. I am sure there is no way to know just how common the finning is on this issue, but I get a feeling that it will be pretty common.

Thanks for posting the picture. That is quite a scratch. I'm surprised the Mint shipped a coin like this one. No QC?

There's no final visual QC, that's for sure.

If there were ever doubts, that last photo just removed them.

The lighting hid it when viewing at a certain angle, but when I turn it at another angle, it's smack back right at you. Good thing my other ones were nice.

Hmmmm...from Coin News:

Quote:
Number of Unsold Gold Mercury dimes Growing by 1K Per Week

Quote:
The sales total for the 2016 Mercury dime Centennial Gold Coin continues to be revised downward as the U.S. Mint processes returns and other related transactions. As of May 15, sales of the coin stood at 117,695 units, 7,305 less than its 125,000-piece mintage limit. This marks a 1,046-coin increase in unsold dimes since this time last week and a 4,815-coin change since the first tally was released on April 26.

The Mint still hasn't provided any updates on its plans for offering the unsold dimes to the public. On April 22, the day following the coin's launch, the Mint issued a statement that said "the status of the Mercury dime 2016 Centennial Gold Coin will remain as currently unavailable until all order reconciliations and order cancellations have been processed." Since the sales total for the issue continues to be adjusted, it's clear the Mint is still processing these types of transactions.

As noted previously, Tom Jurkowsky, Director of the Mint's Office of Corporate Communications, has stated that the Mint plans to offer as much of the remaining inventory as possible. "If we say that 125,000 is the mintage, this is what we want to sell," he said. "It's revenue, but we want to get the coins out to customers and ensure it is done fairly."

The Mint has stated previously that the entire 125,000-piece mintage was struck prior to the coin's release.
