More than half of the Australian 1923 Half Pennies issued for circulation show evidence of major die cracking.
It is estimated that there are only 15,000 1923 Half Pennies in existence.
I suspect that the Melbourne Mint had major problems with hardening the dies in 1923. I also suspect that the die hardening problem may well have continued into 1924, because only 680,000 were issued into circulation in that year, which is the second lowest mintage for George V type Half Pennies.
A very careful die study for 1923 half pennies may well reveal the many dies were used for the tiny number of coins issued into circulation. That is why Australian 1923 Half Pennies are so scarce. That is also why evidence of die cracks is an very good indicator of authenticity.
To boost the issue number of Half Pennies for 1923, Dies that had previously been used for 1922, were re used in 1923. It follows that MOST of the Half Pennies issued in 1923 were dated 1922.

Quote: Are all your coins die cracked? Heheh, no just a few (hundred) that is. Ever since I seriously started collecting, I've been drawn to error coins, and I just love die cracks. Sort of goes with my 'cracked' personality I guess.
