A couple of examples from French Indochina. War time issues like these, minted locally in Hanoi, had some quality issues. 1 centième 1941, zinc. 5 centièmes 1943, aluminium.

Just discovered that the lens of my phonescope is scratched, hence the poor image quality. There goes another twenty five quid!

Quote: Just got in from my cultural evening out and thought I'd post these pics. Sorry the lens is a bit steamed up but you should see enough of the die crack to trace its course. Only ever come across one this bad before but it tells a story so I'm happy enough... Very nice! Quote: Just discovered that the lens of my phonescope is scratched, hence the poor image quality. Quote: Reverse die crack most easily seen between X of DUX and tail and another die crack not mentioned on the reverse from the tail (at K7) to the B of Burg. This is a very nice coin with many issues..

Many thanks! Can't help wondering how much longer the die lasted...

Quote: Can't help wondering how much longer the die lasted... With such extensive cracking, it seems likely that it didn't produce very many more strikes. However you might find an earlier strike from this die where the cracks haven't progressed so much.

These are historically very interesting pieces, perhaps struck under the watchful eyes of Japanese occupation officials? Interesting indeed, from a turbulent period. Japan began posting troops in French Indochina in 1940 and remained there until the end of WW2. It was done in accord with the French Vichy government which were technically their allies, since Vichy was associated with Germany, Japan's ally. So formally it was not an occupation (although in reality it was). The Japanese, however, were mainly interested in the natural resources of Indochina and as long as the French authorities let them exploit those freely, Japan left the administration (and coinage) to the French. Last year, I posted a two threads on the coinage in French Indochina. The following post deals in some more detail with some of the war issues: http://goccf.com/t/445179&whichpage=2#3845517

@t360... I saw a very similar one at Brum Coin Fair a few years back but didn't buy it. I bought this one out of a display case in an antiques centre in Lichfield a couple of weeks ago and now I'm wondering if it's the same coin. We're only talking 20 miles or so...

This was an ebay purchase. It's a 1995 India 5 rupees coin with a Die Crack, Retained Interior Die Break, and a Cud. Got it for very cheap too. Pretty sweet coin.
