The catalogues only cover coins from the 17th century onward. Numbering is usually chronological, however there are exceptions (some older Mexico coins for whatever reason use a sequential format).
There are also Y# numbers, usually seen on coins from former communist regimes. Some older (pre-1860) Russian coins have C# numbers.
