What would you grade this one? Somewhere around VF+ or do you think it could make XF-40. Hard to tell sometimes especially when you view some graded examples of XF40 and the picture guides. Separation of the ribbon without all the diamonds seems the best way to ensure it is a XF coin. Edited by buddy16cat 04/05/2015 6:52 pm

Hard to tell but LIBERTY seems all there..barely. I'm at F12 maybe 15. This coin needs a soak in verdi-care.

To me LIBERTY does not seem to be all there. Ends of the feathers are quite worn and most leaf vanes not visible. F-12 max.

Solid F-12 but no higher. Technically for an Indian Head to grade VF the line below LIBERTY must show full.

The line below "LIBERTY" is there. I just checked. Funny how this pic can cause people to grade the coin at F-12 no higher when the line is clearly there and it is borderline VF to XF. It is not a F-12 coin. I will have to check the original picture.

LIBERTY isn't even all there let alone the line on the headband underneath it. If LIBERTY were all there I'd be willing to say F-15 but it isn't, sorry. The wear on the wreath is also indicative of mid grade fine.

I'm going to give Buddy the benefit of the doubt and say it's VF. I don't think there is enough diamond detail to call it XF. Unless there is a good setup with proper lighting for taking pictures of coins the result of the picture can be deceiving.

To make EF, there needs to be separation between lower hair curl and ribbon. I don't see that.

This is probably a better example of an XF coin. I know I have read the grading IHC reference material posted here before. I also read some choice VF coins make it into an XF slab.
