Looks like it to me. Also kinda looks like the coin has been acid treated unfortunately. Still, a 1918 S in a roll of nickels is a fantastic find! Could be the best Buffalo nickel find CRHing I've seen in a long time.

I believe you're on point with all of this. Your treated image is excellent - may I have permission to archive it for future use as a teaching aid to help people understand what a date-treated Buffalo looks like?

And for the record, I moved this thread. You're so used to posting Moderns that you put this one in Moderns too.

It's no big thing, man. Happens a lot, I move a couple-three threads a day sometimes. Par for the course when you're dealing with people as laser-focused on the coin as we are.

That is a bizarre looking date not to be acid treated. I agree the coin itself looks untreated, but I don't think I've ever seen one with the date worn so much but with all four digits clearly visible.

It could just be the lighting or something, but that is just odd.

It does look like if someone has used something like nic-a-date on it.
You can see staining all around the date, and the texture is quite different in that area from the rest of the nickel.
The rim area is really rough beneath the date, which is typical of the acid treatment.

I'd have to agree that just looking at that picture objectively, it looks to have been acid dated. Different pictures in different lighting would help, though.
