Hi all Ive been a little busy lately so havnt posted for a while. I still have a good pile of unattributed coins of various periods which need dealing with, this coin has stumped me so far. No legends to work with, damaged portrait, the reverse has a lion with either a club or torch above. Weight - 2.70g Size - 13mm      A nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Tia |

I suggest Syracuse , under Agathokles (317-289 BC).
obv : head of Heracles right with at right the inscription SYRAKOSIWN
Rev : lion walking right,club above .albert

yeah, it does really look like that. but most of the ones of the type I found online seem to be larger, like 22 mm? so not sure.

Hi Albert The description is basically correct but when I look at the coin and its variants next to mine there is nothing that made me think it was a match. The bust is totally different and the club makes mine look like either a snake or torch  Further searching turned up a coin of Ptolemy of Mauretania, 24 - 40 ad It has the lion walking right but with a star above, that's the closest match I have found so far. |

the coin of Ptolemy has 2 problems :
1: the size :AE 23
2: the lion is leaping,not walking.
I look further and hope to find the wright denomination . albert

sorry , I find no other matches.I still think it is a coin of Agathokles , size and weight are existing for this coin , the big problem is the different bust ,but I don t find no more than a few coins to compare .albert

It only took 7 months but I finally found it     Hadrian Caesarea Maritima OBV - Bust right - IM?TRA HADRIANO CA(E) REV - Lion walking right, snake above. CIFAC below - COLONIA PRIMA FLAVIA AVGVSTA CAESAREA All of the issues I have found have a " squiggly " snake where as mine looks more like a single head Cadeuceus. Information is sparse at best so more investigation is needed. |

congratulations , I am sure it was not easy to find .A similar coin has been offered on sixbid,Auctiones GmbH , eAuction 19 of 20 october 2013 , lot 49.They give as reference : Ros28,Sofaer pl24,38 .I do not know these books , but thse coins are mostly unknow to me .The coin is rare and in not in Seaky 's Greek Imperial coins .
