If you have a 1909SVDB made in january, it might be a pattern!

This has been discussed elsewhere here on CCF, but I thought it might be best to revisit the topic based on the discussion (and some misperceptions) happening here.
From the PCGS site: "The PCGS First Strike program designates coins issued in the first 30 days of the Mint's release."
This statement makes no reference to whether the coins in question are among the first struck from a pair of dies or the last to be struck. It merely states they were among the first released.
From the NGC site: "NGC offers the Early Releases designation for selected coins received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository during the first 30 days of release." and "Alternatively, NGC offers the First Releases designation, which has the same definition as Early Releases."
Once again, the definition focuses on the release date of the coins; it does not mention anything about when the coins were struck.
In addition, keep in mind that the Mint uses many pairs of dies to strike coins throughout the year - you could receive a "first strike" coin in January, June, November, etc. That's why the grading services define these special labels based on release date and not actual strike order.

You are right. I normally do not buy slabbed coins but I have bought a handful for certain types/dates where I felt a little more 'comfortable' buying. Of course, there are no guarantees, but overall, it's the right thing to do.
I got bad news from the Mint yesterday. It seems that my MOD order is now on back-order. They ARE going to mail me the proof set I reordered at the same time (I had ordered it in March but they never sent it). Now, when they do make and send out the MOD set, will they charge me more for postage? I'm also due to get the silver proof set next week so I'm hoping that they just wait and mail everything at once.

Quote: when they do make and send out the MOD set, will they charge me more for postage? No, they only charge for shipping once per order. Quote: I'm also due to get the silver proof set next week so I'm hoping that they just wait and mail everything at once. They will not combine shipping so you will have to pay S&H when you order the Silver Proof Set. I was debating on waiting to order the MoD set with the Silver Proof Set to save on shipping but it's looking like its a good thing I didn't wait.

I would like to know what people think of the quality of the march of Dimes sets you have received. We ordered 5 sets so we could keep 2 and give the other 3 to our children. Out of 5 sets, there is ONE that I MIGHT keep. The others are going Back. I will most likely return all 5 sets. I am very disappointed. But this is getting to be the New Normal for the sets I receive from the Mint. There is NOT ONE west point dime that doesn't have a strike through on it. Looks like they wiped the dies with a fiber cloth of something and didn't get all the residue off. One even has the remainder of what looks to be a small redish fragment of cloth left imbedded into the coin. It really makes me think about going a head and Not buying from the mint and spend the extra $$ buying sight seen, in hand sets even if they are at a premium. I really hate to say that but. This means that the money I spent on the set's will be in limbo until approx. Aug. The people who did not get there orders in or have them on back order are most likely going to receive better stock. Sorry for the rant but I am extremly disappointed/'sad/frustrated with the quality of coins I have been receiving over the past 2 and 1/2 years. Mainly the proof sets. I feel horrible! I HOPE you all receive better then I. Charlie

I disagree, some of the people who have a back order status will most likely get some of the rejected coins. From personal experience with the mint on buying in the back order status I know I have received coins that where previously rejected by someone else. I'm positive that some orders will be filled by returned shipments and shipped sooner than expected even though the status of back order is till August.

There is no way in the world I would send any of my sets back. It will be sold out in a week and people will be trying hard to one for their collections.

Here is a quick example of one of the Dollars with what I think is cloth retained in a strike through and on the same dollar a retained lamination? Cloth? Retained Lamination? I have a lot more pictures to take but you get the idea. What do you think? I will post these in the error's section as well. I'm really besides myself at the moment. Quote: I disagree, some of the people who have a back order status will most likely get some of the rejected coins I don't think so, they are supposed to destroy the returned items. That's what they told me on the phone anyway. But I guess only they really know.

So the max. mintage is now 74,995? :) I'm sorry about the poor quality coins you received. But that's the problem when you have careless employees and hardly any QA. But don't despair, I doubt you'll have to wait until August for your replacements. The mint has sets set aside for returns. That happened to me with the gold Baseball HOF - returned one and got a replacement immediately although most others were still on backorder.
