Gold shot up $20 an ounce today, so you just made some more money (on paper). That is an incredible find. Less than $1200 would be a bargain. Less than $1000 would be a steal. $750?!?!? That's an out-and-out HEIST! Well done!

I never found coins at yard sales but did find AR-15 guy was selling for $800. I did not buy it. I used to buy silver at auctions for melt down value in early 2000's. I wish I still had all that silver because it was selling for about $7 an ounce sterling. I bought many bowls, trays and other silver pieces and I sold them at a small loss. Coins, antiques, stocks, houses are all assets and should be bought to be held. You buy low and sell high. This goes for all collectibles.

With yard and garage sales you want to ask if they have a coin collection they want to sell even if you don't see it. This is what pros do. They come early and try to find out what else the seller has hidden away. You carry a big wad of cash and offer to buy that old Mercury dime collection for $400 cash. They may have one coin worth the $400 and all the rest are free.

Congratulations to the OP! Looking at it from another perspective, those who are left with collectibles after someone passes often don't have a clue how to sell them and tend to take the easy route. If you want your relatives to get top dollar, make sure you have a plan for them to dispose of your collection. The bad news here is that their ignorance (and perhaps laziness) cost them some money. The good news is that the coins now have a home were they are once again appreciated.

I don't wish to comment on these particular gold coins but how do yard sale hounds like myself make sure that an apparently good looking $ 5 or $ 10 gold piece, for example, is 100% authentic?

I always carry around a pair of calipers and a gram scale but what other types of feel-good pre-purchase assessments should be considered to avoid be taken to the cleaners?
