While doing one of my regular buying trips today I saw what is supposed to be a pair of dies for a 1922 Peace dollar. The story is that they were sold by the mint way back when as scrap. I've done some very basic internet searching & can't seem to find any info. The only dies I've ever seen or heard of are ones that have been defaced. Can anyone clue me in about these and/or point me in the right direction to find more information?

Sounds unusual, and might be a great find. Just curious, how much are they asking for them? And please, if possible, post a pic. The experts here will probably be able to tell you if they are real.

Based on the rarity of these dies and the fact that they are not defaced, I would assume they are fake. However, I'm not an expert, and there's always a chance...

I didn't get a chance to take pictures. Anyone know of a link to an image of the real deal?

I know in the 18th and early 19th century they were rather lax in security dealing with disposal of old dies often just selling them as scrap. In the latter half of the 19th century they became much more strict in dealing with destruction and disposal of dies. By the 20th century they had serious accounting and destruction procedures in place for defacing the dies before disposal. I would think it would be very unlikely an undefaced pair of dies could legally leave the mint (Maybe a donation to a museum but even then I doubt they would give an undefaced pair of dies for the same coin.) My guess is this was probably a pair of dies for making counterfeit Peace dollars. (could be modern or contemporary) In either case buying them could be hazardous. If they were genuine dies I'm sure the government would consider them stolen government property. If they are dies for counterfeits, possession of them is illegal under title 18 sec 487. Once again subject to confiscation and possibly punishment that includes fines and/or imprisonment.

notify the mint or the secret service. Doupt any punishment will come to you if you report and hand them over willingly.

The thing is illegal or not a lot of collectors would love to own them.
