I came across 3 Shield nickels in an "unsearched" roll I purchased. 1 has to be an 1867 because it has rays on the back. Unfortunately the dates and observe rim is gone on all 3. Any value in these or any way to restore the dates on them? Thanks!

The one with rays could also be an 1866.

Good point, thanks. I've never seen a Shield nickel in person until now. Atleast I truly think the rolls were unsearched. I also got a 1932 helvetia coin in XF condition as well as a bunch of V-nickels (mostly 1900's).

Anything you can do to restore a date on a Buffalo nickel, you can do to a Shield nickel. I've sold several restored date Shield nickels on ebay and made a couple of bucks on them. Ok for a couple of bucks, but not much value really.

I hope that "1932" you got is not a nickel......If it is, it's a fake.

The 1932 is a Switzerland 2 rappen (http://www.catawiki.com/catalog/coi...appen-1932). Kind of odd it was in a nickel roll. It isn't terribly valuable but definately worth keeping since it is in such good shape (I'd say XF).

Unless you found a very valuable one, spending time and money trying to restore those dates could well be a waste of time. Still nice coins to collect.

IDEA: lowball Shield nickels go well in a mini-collection with the similar-looking 2 cent pieces from the same era.
