I would feel weird cracking a slab; if I needed a coin for a set and it was in a slab, I could just buy a low grade one to fill the hole and know I had the good one off to the side. To this day I have never cracked a slab or proof set- but the 1975-S proof coins in my set came from a proof set my uncle cracked. He kept the bicentennials and gave me the rest for this album.

I needed a Barber half to complete a type halves Capital Plastics holder and bought a PCGS AU-58 1912-D to fill it. Within an hour after the coin was removed from the box it was mailed in the coin was out of the slab and in the holder. The Seated half was a crack out, the Bust half was purchased raw from a very reputable dealer. Boy does this set look nice.

I have a question regarding that half dollar set, which by the way, is great (I should get one). Since the Bust Half spot covers both sizes, how would a small size (reeded edge) fit?

Quote: Since the Bust Half spot covers both sizes, how would a small size (reeded edge) fit? You would have to shim it with some non PVC plastic coin flip. The bust type intended to be put in this is the 1807-36 type only since the reeded edge type lasted for only three years.

Problem is that by the time I will be ready to buy certain key dates, finding one raw may be unlikely, even in lower grades.

I'm a collector on a tight budget. Went to a local coin show today and found a coin to fill one of the many open holes in my Dansco 7070 album. This is my first Trade dollar.

Nice pickup .....It is nice to get that Trade dollarhole filled. I think it is one of the harder holes to fill.
