I do not purchase Government bullion coins, so this may be a stupid question. If the US Mint only produced 50K, then why are they still offering this coin to the public, (I checked this morning and added one to my cart, with no mention of not available no a backorder)?

This one was always available to the public.
It is the gold American Eagle bullion coins that lack a mint mark that are only available from Authorized Purchasers.

Mentioned this in the Kennedy thread, but I sent in two to be graded. One came back 69, the other MS70, woohoo!

I just bought one this morning. No mention of back order and the charge was immediately registered on my CC acct.
Discouraging to read so many negative comments about this issue. I figure with a mintage of 50K (or less), it will be worth at least what I paid for it and probably at least 50% more in 5 years or so.
I was one of the lucky ones who ignored all the negative comments in regards to the 1995W Gold Anniversary set when I purchased THAT! I think this WILL increase in value, although probably not nearly as well at the 1995W set did.

The backorder has been lifted for the last few weeks. If I remember correctly, they sold 42,920 as of last Tuesday (which was a climb by about 500), so should break the 43,000 mark this week. If the pace continues, it should sell out not too long after the new year (unless the pace picks up with the holiday season). Although my last prediction on the Kennedy sellout was off by a few days, so we'll see.

The coin sales have really spiked from last week. Between the 18th and 25th of October, they sold 1923 Liberty coins to bring total sales to 44,843. If that pace continues, we'll see a sellout by Black Friday.

I think I know why the number climbed so much now........the household limit is now gone.

The rate of the coins being sold appears to have resumed to a normal rate. 578 coins were sold between October 25th and November 2nd to bring the total sales to 45,421. Bringing it to 90.8% sold. At this rate (if it continues), it should sell out shortly after the new year.

I think the mint overshot some. Everyone should have a good opportunity to get one, but it's not good that it might go in to next year. Perhaps they produced about 10% more than they needed to.

Well the coin is now showing as "Currently Unavailable" on the Mint's website. Promoting it on the home page might have helped pushed it over the top. We'll see Tuesday what the sales figures are.
