I've never sold any coins, but some descriptions I've used on forums are:

Low Mintage - hard to find but not impossible (5 million & under)
Extremely Low Mintage - very difficult to find (1 million & under)
Very hard to find
Hard to find
Difficult to find, but not impossible
Difficult to find in good condition

I think the main thing is don't be misleading or use words that are ambiguous. You have no idea how many sellers were trying to flog 'mule like edge' $2 coins when they were simply a bit off centre & only worth face or maybe 50˘ above face.

The practice seems to have disappeared for now, but it re-surfaces every so often.

The 1991 Ram head is a good example. It is not scarce as such on it's mintage figures, but has a quite low mintage compared to other 50 cent in the series. It is however, hard to find, and highly sought after, as a result of it's appeal to collectors and the general public alike. Many have kept all they have found.
It's not always a case mintage either, good examples are the 1983 and 1984 20 cent coins. High mintage for both, but the majority have been melted down post strike. This means they only exist in the circulating market, in very small numbers, making them scarcer

.
Unfortunately I do, and made many attempts to bring the overwhelming number of these slight mis-strike coins in the decimal series, to the attention of the new or inexperienced buyer, via other coin forums, but still they bid. They are so common in some years it's harder to find a normal one. Thankfully they have decreased in number of auctions claiming this, which is a good thing.
Do a search on ebay for scarce and / or rare. It's amazing the number of coins with these false claims there are for sale.

But this dictionary does not have 'as rare as rocking horse...!

I have seen this term used to describe the scarcity of the 1951 plain Obv 4 Half penny. Not quite accurate, but they certainly are harder to find.

It looks like more than the 1.8 million 2007 50c coins have finally hit the market. I noodled $100 worth of coins today and found 14 2007s. 14 out of 200 coins = 7% (I think) of all 50c coins out there. Luck maybe, but I don't think so. I am thinking that the mintage figure will end up being something similar to the Outback 50c of 11.5 million.

I'm not throwing them back yet, but they are starting to show up finally. Although I ended up with 5 last week, it's difficult to get one that hasn't had a hard life. 50˘ & 20˘ really seem to mark up easily these days.

Good to see they are turning up in somewhat plentiful supply to our collecting community.
Has anyone noticed any with doubling and frosting to the lower half of the design on the reverse side yet? If so in large or small numbers?
Any other odds and ends to look out for?
