I have one speciman coin left over from the baby or mint set from 2007 which I am keeping, and to date hadn't found any in circulation. Today that changed as I got my first 2007 50 cent circulation coin. They seem to be scarce up my way. Cheers.

Proko & justa...Thanks for the offer of 50¢, I actually bought 10 a little while ago & some of them were in excellent condition, not quite Unc but a lot better than what I'm getting from circulation. I do appreciate the offer, but I don't really need them.

I think everyone will get to collect their own, it's just going to take some time.

I haven't seen the doubling/frosting that farnby mentined yet.

The doubling and frosting seems to have deteriorated even further on the 2007 50 cent.
There is no longer frosting, just a near completely broken die. Check out the reeds behind the roo the 50 and the reeds around the emus legs, the shield and the star at the top, present else where but these points show it well.

I've seen this on other years, but haven't noticed it on 2007 coins yet.

I wonder if it's indicative of overuse of the dies & therefore maybe a lot higher mintage than what most people are currently thinking of 1.8m.

2001 CoF CoA suffered this condition pretty badly & there were 43.1m of them.

Could they be using the same reverse dies that were used for 2006?

Yes, I also was thinking along those lines. I Have found a lot of 2006 with the doubling under the foot of the roo, roo's tail, and 50. Then some of the first 2007 I found had the same, but with much more noticeable frosting around the reeding. Now this one turns up.

I think you are also on the right track nancyc, I'm thinking by the numbers I'm finding at the moment, wouldn't be surprised if mintage will end up being 10 mill +.

If the reports about the metal value of our 'silver' coins are correct then the mint is probably trying everything possible to cut costs because they will now be making a loss on 5¢, 10¢ and 20¢ coins

Not replacing dies and trying to push them a bit more sounds like a classic penny saving theory.

Anyone prepared to hazard a guess how long it is before we get new, smaller coins à la New Zealand? I say (smile and pretend you are confident).......2010. But, can the beaurocracy work that fast? -yes, when it involves profits foregone!

Jeff

PS I hope they don't start issuing nickel plated steel coins but stick to 100% the same alloy through. Maybe stainless steel is a possibility? Then the dies would have to be replaced often.

Have heard similar rumblings around the traps. I think if and when they do switch, the 5 cent might be history. Pretending to be confident, I'd say 2011, just 2 be different.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if RAM started using steel cores for our coins.

The cost of the current coin metals is probably going to keep increasing, so making the coins smaller would only work for a while, & soon the coins would end up too small to handle.

I wouldn't care if they were steel clad with whatever. It would make more sense to keep the coins the same size, but change the composition.

I also wouldn't be surprised if it happened within the next 2 years.

This Fiji 50 cent looks like nickel clad steel and it also looks like the RAM made it. It's the same size weight and looks pretty much like our 50¢ except it's magnetic.

My point is they already have the expertise and tools required. Probably just need the go ahead from the powers that be.

I have some Fijis coins here -better grab a magnet and see.
Some of the new NZ are nickel coated steel aren't they? (I will soon know; will test them too.)

[Be patient Nancy and you never know where these will find their way.]

Fiji silver coins have been steel since at least 1990.

The 'new' small NZ coins, 10¢, 20¢ & 50¢ are also magnetic.

Have any reasonable amount of 2007 50¢ turned up yet?

I am looking at buying a couple of rolls but, at $50 per roll going price, I want to calculate the risk.

Any comments?

I reckon they are low as well..... But in saying that, I have about 10..... so I'm guessing maybe somewhere around 5 million?
