A few days ago I bought the Red Book for 2016 on ebay and it finally arrived today in the mail

Now that the easy part is over, it's time to figure out how to actually use it

the Red Book is more of a price guide, not a grading guide. For that you need a photograde

Photograde can be accessed online, but eventually you will want to have a paper copy (says the old fart paper copy person)

Here's a great grading resource; PCGS Photograde online. I use it ALL the time, and it's worked really well for me.

Assuming it's the standard Red Book and not the mega one (the mega book is almost 1500 pages and weighs about as much as a house) I'd recommend reading the first section to start. I thinks it's called "Welcome To Numismatics". It's probably 25 to 30 pages and it's quite good. After that I'd be sure to jump towards the back and read a section titled "Coin Collecting: Yesterday and Today". It's a short section, only around 5 pages but it too is a great read for anyone new to the hobby. And if you're feeling a little nerdy you might read the glossary of terms that comes right after that. Getting familiar with the most common terms will make future numismatic reading easier to understand and enjoy.

I actually started with this book for grading: The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins. Its nice to have a paper reference guide right there whenever you want it to learn from. http://www.amazon.com/Official-Amer...ng+standards
