It couldn't be a D over S. The punch at that time was discontinued with the closing of the San Francisco mint in 1955. The mint didn't re-opened in 1965.

I'm not positive that it is a rpm. Note the Die Deterioration lines at 2 o'clock on the mintmark. They somewhat match those at the serif. We're it mine I would set it aside as a maybe but probably not. I have a pile of those.

On my crappy phone now , but does the upper serif on the C of AMERICA show a similar split If so I would lean towards deterioration.

If so I would lean towards deterioration. No, it doesn't stoneman, but, there are other anomalies. I can try to take better close-up pics with a loupe. I spent two hours before bed reading about how coins are made and struck. lol And, yeah, I was wondering if it was a triple RPM too. I'll tell you, there is more to it than what you can see in the pics I posted. Like I said, I'll try to get better pics later.

Quote: The mint didn't re-opened in 1965. Thought it wasn't until 1968. Were the SMS sets produced in San Francisco?

The coin is in pretty nice condition, but definitely a late die state. Unless I see better pics, it looks like Die Deterioration to me.

The 1965-1967 didn't have mint marks for any of the coins those years from the four mints. (yes four)

That would be Philly, Denver, San Francisco, and.... West Point?

Correct! The West Point mint was used to fill the void of the coinage removed because of the silver pulled.

The bottom serif does seem to show a split where it should be and counter to the deterioration lines so I believe you do have a rpm. In a shot or two I can see a curve may lead you to see part of an S but as Coop has already said the San Francisco mint had been out of the final production end of the minting process for a few years so a D/S it should not be.
