I was attributing this 1844 Large Cent last night, and noticed it was an N-3, but when I checked Newcombs book, he has a State a. and a State b..The state a. has an outline at the lower left of the 1 and 8. It's clearly visible here. So I'm calling my 1844 an N-3a, although it's not an official variety. BTW, this is my first pic with my new $15 usb microscope.

Here's the seller's listing. Not VF20, but F15 imo. Nice original coin.

Without gushing too much, it's about the best $15 I've spent. Comes with software.

Hmmm, you just highlighted the need for a device I didn't know I wanted or existed. Thanks a lot -_-

You can, but the one I tried didn't come out well. Maybe there is a tweak or two that can be made, but imo a P&S camera or cell phone is better for the whole coin.
