I know one dealer cleared four entire cases out of the 8 they had across two tables. I suspect your dealer friend just picked the wrong stuff to bring... it happens, even to the best - you spend a lot of time thinking about what will sell and sometimes you just guess wrong. The BustNuts were out in force, the SL club snagged at least half a dozen new members (me included). orfew - it wasn't 2 full rows of ancients, but rather an section of 2 rows that were identified that way (the idea being if you cluster dealers selling similar material, people with that interest don't have to walk the whole 600K SqFt. The ANA does this with world coins too. But people are also free to pick any available booth and several ancient and world dealers selected booths in the higher rent districts too. So going out to the show map and selecting dealers self-identified as selling ancients give this: Each of the lighter colored squares is a dealer. But too the prices were just excessive. At many tables even more than the Red Book. Lots and lots of observers, just not a lot of buyers. Yes some dealers may have made out well but many left not so lucky. This is a great type of show for those that don't have lots of other coin shows. By me we have at least 3 a Month, every Month. Most of the shows I have been to have only had 2-3 tables where any ancients were for sale. Most of my ancients purchases have therefore been online.
