I'm a raw coin collector, I don't approve of TPG they've been known to be not accurate on occasion . So I use the T-BOP grading company . Works for me. No complaints for the last 32 years.

None - they all ruined a lot of the fun of the hobby. Before them each coin and MM had their own separate value even in circulated condition. Slabbing made people focus so much on only the best grades that all coins except keys are now looked at as pretty much equal and just hole fillers. They also could have been scientifically based years ago by computer to eliminate the human error. I used to work in a quality control department with a machine that scanned the most minute details in our parts automatically. It could have handked this type of job for coin grading... back in the 90's!
I personally think the reason the human element has been kept so long is that when they knew they could do it by machine, they also figured if they postponed it for awhile, they could later make tons of money with a new marketing scheme enticing people to send in their old slabs to be computer graded and eliminate the human error.. Our NEW grading system will give the ACTUAL grade of your slabbed coin... You really don't want to go on wondering if its presnetly assigned grade is the REAL one do you?
Let's face it - the green bean can be marketed, so could a computer-graded slab campaign even though the tech has been out there for years.

Quote:A dealer told me he had 2 ANACS Morgan dollars graded MS65. Nobody wanted to look at them for 2 years. So he cracked em out and sent to PCGS. They got MS 65 and 66 grades. The 66 sold the next show. Then the 65 sold the show after that. And that goes to prove for all of the bashers that ANACS grades equally if not more conservatively than PCGS or NGC. I guess you can't beat the media marketing machine.

And that the people buying them don't know what they are buying and are just buying labels. If they knew the coins they would have recognized the quality while they were in the ANACS slabs and bought them there. They wanted a PCGS label not a quality coin.

More and more I'm siding with JBuck! I know my coins pretty well, and don't need any company to tell me what I already know for a fee, I prefer coins I'm selling to be in PCGS holders if they are expensive. My favorite slab is always been the little white ANACS holder, and the SEGS Top Labeled holders, I like ICG for the current style, not their grading though. That said I don't think I've submitted any coins to a TPG in more than 2 or 3 years now. I do have a couple of nice expensive Morgan VAM's I'd like to have in PCGS holders only to get more on the resale.

When the time comes, I will probably buy key dates in slabs. Not so much for what they offer, but raw coins are becoming infrequent.

For me it depends on what series we are talking about ! It seems one company will be a bit more conservative when dealing with a certain series while the other company needs to tighten up and vice versa .. I will say this tough , I have came across alot more NGC graded coins that I've question and at times even thought shouldn't be in a problem free holder than I have any of the other 3 company's.

Part of the problem with answering this question is the TPG's have displayed no real consistency over the years, and they have varied on differing curves from each other. Today, as they grade right now, I like ANACS for Morgans and NGC for everything else. Five years ago, I would have switched NGC for PCGS.

From my experience after jumping back in the pool, I prefer OGP when dealing with modern coins. I think the slabs take the fun out of handling them. However, I do see value in the classic coins being slabbed for authenticity sake and to ensure they are in original condition (not cleaned). I have no problem buying raws though if it's from a seller I know/trust and the coin appeals to me.
I only bought one slabbed modern and that was because it was rated 70 and I got a good price on it. On the other hand, if people are willing to pay a fortune for something rated 70 (*cough* Eisenhower *cough*), the risk taker in me will play the game and send it in if there's a chance one item can subsidize my future collecting.

PCGS for resale.
ANACS for authentication/resale of coins $150-200.

I prefer PCGS because they have more resell value. I also like NGC.

I will grade most of my coins through PCGS because I live in SO CAL. If I had a choice I would use PCGS for a majority of my Silver coins or certain coins before 1940. As for NGC, I would use them for all my Gold coins and a small variety of years and countries.
Overall it is based on preference. NGC seems to have a stronger resell value with coins. That is my opinion.
