Well, as long as you mention it, my three are up, but initially I did have it in mind to use this Urbs Roma in reference to the series of Constantinian City Commemoratives of 330-335: It's not a contender though, I know. But the thought was there. [Was I supposed to say that the coins I have posted are from my collection? They are.]

Great entries guys, and now the final 24 hours for anyone who hasn't entered... voting will start tomorrow at 12 noon British summer time (8am forum time)
Just to recap voting. We want a list of 5 coins in order of preferred type. Points will be awarded (10 for first, 8 for second, 5 for 3rd, 2 for fourth and 1 for fifth) After all is done we should be able to make a list of the best Roman coins to have in our collections.
Next week will be the Greek coins, my favourites ^^

1.Marc Antony Legionary Denarius 2.Marcus Aurelius Denarius 3.Hadrian Denarius (Either type posted) 4.Julius Caesar (Though Dutch did so well to get those coins at that price, Caesar's coins seem too dear) 5.Urbs Roma Romulus and Remus
I think the final coin that imperator posted is very attractive, I love the rhino on it but in terms of types I would most like in my collection my selections are as above.

Quote: We will be voting for the coin type rather than the specific coin... (emphasis added) Based then on type not examples: 1. Campgate reverse (I have an extensive collection of this type, including dozens of Roman Provincial and silver and bronze from before Constantine and much later as well. It's a great type for study.) 2. Memmi Late Republican/Imperatorial denarii: (to me these coins as a whole are historically and artistically interesting) 3. Republican denarius (As a class they are more varied in theme and artistic in execution than anything imperial.) 4. Constantine eyes-to-heaven bronze: (many reverse types and all are emblematic of Constantine) 5. Urbs Roma commemorative (I also have an extensive collection by officina for this type - which virtually shouts "ROMAN") I know you did not ask for an explanation of our choices, but I felt that something like that was in order. While I do respect collecting for the historical significance of the figures on a coin, my personal bias is for the designs of the coins themselves. The late imperial proliferation of mints allows for comparative study of the way different regions interpreted the central design directives. That to me is most fascinating. I must confess that long ago I got bored with imperial silver, especially the kinds of pieces costing less than $300. One is much like another from one emperor to the next, without benefit of great diversity of style and execution for any one ruler. The exceptions are mostly outside the price range.

IRB - you are right I did not ask for an explanation but the reason for the thread is to stimulate discussion. I for one am interested in hearing the opinions of other collectors... we are not all the same and to hear what other people look for and appreciate is useful info.
I also agree with you about the importance of the design of the coins... it is the reason I far favour the Greek coins to the Roman ones.

David, I totally get that about the Greek over Roman from the standpoint of design. Of course, the better the design, the higher the price point, for anything, ancient or modern. Still....
Hmmm. I'm beginning to see a pattern here. The coins most admired are the ones not yet owned but wanted. I wonder what kinds of responses we would get from collectors who have particular specialties that get their main attention.
orfew, it is not mine to give, but if you had the opportunity, what Roman coins would you have submitted?
