I just bought these both for less than the one with the large obverse character is worth. I am very confident that these are real, but I will wait for in-hand inspection to make that determination.

The seller also had a Wang Mang value 500 key coin, but it was an old fake. I couldn't tell how old, but it wasn't original. Because of that, I passed it by.

I am also thinking about buying some very scarce knife and spade coins. Not sure if my budget will hold up or what the coins will sell for just yet...

BTW, 2000th post!

Two very nice pieces. I've been wanted to buy some of these, but I don't know enough about them to tell which ar real or fake.

I know nothing about these either, I couldn't tell a good one from a bad one. What I do know is that 2000 deserves some fruit.

I finally got them in hand. The "Lin" spade initially felt and looked wrong, but after some study, it looks like a genuine coin whose patina has been almost completely stripped off woth a wire brush. The feel was actually the same as the other one I already had.

The other spade is far more interesting. It is much heavier and robust than most square-foot spades, and the shape is much more "squat." These facts lead me to believe that this is one of the earliest examples of this type produced. The patina shows evidence of being fused to other coins while buried underground. I am completely sure this coin is genuine.

Great additions. I had wondered why, on the "Lin" spade, there was none of the blue/green highlights often seen with these. I had figured perhaps the photo was "off," but a stripped patina certainly makes sense. The surface of the second one not only underscores its authenticity but also adds character and history, I think. I love your enthusiasm for this specialized area...your write-up's are great.
