Looks like a doubled ear. Here's the VW page of doubled ears. Check yours against them. I'm thinking you should start with VAM 16

well, vam-42 cotton leaves and ear match to a T. the leaves are doubled in the exact same spot. the ear as well as the hair above the ear which is not doubled all the was across, only behind the ear.
the issue I'm having is vam-42 doesn't have reverse diagnostic and the reverse seems to match VAM-21 to a T. But the obverse markers don't match.
so now what? haha
*edit
this is fun!

got it. VAM-39. I overlooked the polishing lines in liberty. mainly the "Y" as VAM-39 has unique lines to that die. the reverse is a C3a which is the same reverse shared by VAM-21 and 42. which explains why I was getting two different VAMs before. thanks guys

Fascinating piece of kit either way; this probably won't be a known die state for the VAM. This might be a good coin to cause you to register at VAMworld to ask a couple questions. VAM-39 looks like a good match, and a pitted die state deserves recording. Their image posting system isn't intuitive; make sure you upload images with filenames unique to you (I prepend all my image filenames with "SD") as any existing image name you duplicate will be overwritten.
