Well, I caught up on this thread, had a cup of Red Rose and came back to see some new posts. Firstly, Jesse. Having a direct connection to C.C.N. on this forum is a great thing. I honestly did not think you came off as arrogant (at first) in your reply. You just quoted Grandpapa's choice of words. I think being compared to counterfeiters was a bit harsh. However it does not justify these comments Quote: I'll be sure to bow down when we meet in person! Quote: And hi SPP. Since my job only involves "reviewing, summarizing and reporting on press release" [sic], that means I don't deserve respect? I really don't understand what you're getting at, but I must point out your summary of how what I do for a living is grossly misinformed (and what of your job, in which you simply look at ice all day?) Quote: so while I'm not doing numismatic research like all your favourite heroes, I am most definitely a numismatic journalist....Please, embarrass yourself with Mike once more, if you'd like.
Since you are repersenting your publication you should not be insulting your paitrons. You need us, not we need you. If you are going to put down the owner of Sherwood Park Pennies and the R.C.N.A's New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island area director what do you think they are going to tell people when they ask about whether or not it is worth subscribing to C.C.N.? If I was your boss you would be sooo fired right now. On an aside thank you for informing us about the trends. One thing I can contribute is that I find your pricing for the P.E.I. cent are grossly off. Anything under a 20 grade can be had for $1-$5. Quote: And again, if there's something anyone would like to see covered in CCN, let me know. If there's a story we're missing, let me know. As an exonumia guy I think it would be cool if you stuck in a "token watch". I am tracking down old transit tokens and municipal tokens and what not but I never know how to learn of new tokens being issued across the country. You could maybe do it in conjunction with your new coin segment?

Things that make you go hmmmmmmm...
Sept. 7 at 10:35 a.m., CCN responded to my posting of this clipping on Facebook.
Sept. 7 at 12:07 p.m., I got a message from Facebook saying someone had reported that a photo I posted in 2007 contained nudity. They reviewed it and said it did not violate their policy.
Hmmm...
And BTW Sonny, it's Grandpapa.

Well, I just got back from the cottage for the summer, and I thought I'd check-in to CCF to get caught up on all the numismatic gossip of the season. This is the first thread I stumbled across. And I just can't help but interject... First, one thing people need to keep in mind is that Jesse isn't a customer service rep, an issues manager, nor an official spokesperson for CCN. He's a reporter. Reporters are pushy and provocative. That's what they are programmed, err, trained to do. That being said, it is incumbent on reporters to bridge relationships within their constituency to report stories that impact their focused community. Thus, alienating a large representation of the coin community with sarcastically-laced condescending tone (especially under the guise of an apology) won't yield success in fulfilling that objective. IMHO, that is where Jesse did a disservice to his employer. As someone noted earlier: had he simply apologized and refrained from further commentary (or insisting on having the last word), this would not have blown-up the way it did. I hope and trust Jesse can add value to the CCN publication and turn it around to make it worth it for people to once again subscribe.

Sonny is named Jesse? There seems to be a lot of Angst here from past encounters. Sure made some of the 'members' that know better to bounce around in their computer chairs. Since I am thoroughly uninformed and have no horse in this race: Sonny

Also, "Sonny" or "Jesse" or whoever you are, you said that you are not a representative of CCN, so then I suggest not speaking in behalf of your employer. I don't think they would like that at all. Also, geez man, this is a really good place filled with nice people, and you coming in here trying to defend yourself, and having a rude attitude in the process, is not very welcoming for new users, or kind. I suggest that an official CCN representative should handle stuff like this, rather than a rude reporter.

Any complaint of "Trends" values, should be accompanied by the specific coin, year and grade you have a problem with.....then, the discussion could be about that specific valuation, not the general trends. It's like complaining about the weather, when you really are talking about yesterday's rain.

The reason I started this thread, and one or two others, was the hope that someone from CCN would realise their paper was full of factual errors, typos, and just plain stupid mistakes and FINALLY do something about the situation. Well, I seriously doubt that will happen.
I am glad "Sonny" will not lose his job. That was never my intention. I hope that, in the long run, this will be a learning experience for him. If I ever encounter him at a show I will suggest we go for a beer or ten.

Quote: Some has forwarded to the CCN this thread and I talked to the CCN at the London Show about this thread. Sonny, will not lose his job and has been asked not to leave anymore posts to this thread This is true. I sent Mike Walsh an email concerning this thread last week, after all, I was asked to "embarrass myself once more"... Actually, as much as I have my differences with some of the writers of Canadian Coin News, Canada needs a numismatic newsletter outside of the RCNA. The hobby needs it. While CCN currently does not suit my needs as a numismatist, it has the potential to recover and serve the Canadian collecting community. I was genuinely concerned that the comments being made by Jesse here, on one of the largest coin sites on the internet, were doing more harm than good - so I made Mike Walsh aware of this thread. I was somewhat disappointed however, that there was not a formal response from Canadian Coin News.

5:18 on the Atlantic coast. My aunt came through the door at 5 and said that some co-worker's daughter was selling magazine subscription and I need to pick something out for Christmas. My sister picked out McCall Quilting and I passed on C.C.N. and oppted for Canada's History.
I am not doing this completely because of this thread but the issue in question, which just arrived at my door, was too addy and had no real content beyond the basics. I fell as I job hunt and save money that in the new year I will just join wooden money and token societies and that the specialty new letters will serve me well.
I suppose I will start a new thread as oppose to de-railing this one but I am sure there are other periodicals out there for the collector.

I like CNN. When I go to my clubs semi-annual show, I always put my well read issues on a table for anyone to take home a copy. They are always gone well before the show is over where the other national publications from the USA are still on the table. I like the CNN because it does have a lot of articles about coins, history, errors etc. I look forward to every issue. It's my connection to Canada, thank you!
