My hypothesis on this coin.......Purchased as NGC AU-55 by Adam in 2009. He broke the coin out and attempted to remove the "blotchiness" on the obverse( the blotchiness is due to the poor quality of copper the US Mint used and can not be fixed). Adam probably put the coin in fire and than tooled the obverse. When that failed, he probably scrubbed the coin and than recolored it (all of which failed to fix the blotches). Coin was than resubmitted to NGC where it obtained the AU details-burnished grade. Coin was sold on Heritage in 2014 and the buyer cracked-out the coin after realizing it had previously been straight graded 5 years earlier. The scratch at 4-6 O'Clock probably occured long ago when the coin was removed carelessly from a 2x2 holder from a staple end. JMHO

Wow, I bet if someone "hypothesized" that about you on a public forum, you'd go off the charts crazy.

I think it's pretty obvious, but I'll explain anyway. If someone, on a public forum, suggested that HE was selling a tooled coin and concealed it, he'd likely have a conniption. Just my hypothesis though.

Pawn S, I never said Adam concealed a tooled coin. Please learn to read/comprehend.

Quote: I never said Adam concealed a tooled coin. No, you said "Tooled. scrubbed & recoloured" and obviously posted for sale with the original label.

Adam did NOT put the coin up for sale EVER with the original label. Adam had the coin recertified and put up for auction oh Heritage in the new NGC AU details-burnished holder in 2014 He NEVER tried to conceal the post damage done to the coin: http://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cents...ption-071515Again, please learn to read/comprehend before posting and making yourself look foolish.

An incredible story, and excellent pice of detective work. I never could have imagined this would turn out like this. You are well advised to cancel the purchase immediately 732amram.
This whole thing begs the question: was the present seller, who sold the coin to 732amram, aware of the current status of this coin?

Lets Put the whole thing in a tailspin ---------OMG ! Friscomint1793 has a lot of rare coins many in higher grades--and many with all types of issues. Guy puts the original lable thats was true at one point----------till it was popped out and resubmitted-and came back to haunt with a Burnished lable*. So here is the thing---im going to put my thinking cap on because Go find another better looking coin with the details and it looks okay for the price. I'm not paying $6K for a solid grader. Under $2K is much less details and would most likely have unsightly issues. SO-------Im just counting on that there is luster left on this coin--and the Burnished label is because of very minor adjustments like it said( burnished with great care* --go read. Even a small scratch can render a coin Details grade----we all know that-----lol. So when all set and done--Ill get this coin that looks great from the pics from friscomint1793 and ill post my own pictures when I receive the coin for E-V-R-E-O-N-E to see---------- Stay tuned ! AA
