I'm back with another question wondering if a coin has been cleaned or is original. This high grade 1854 Large Cent was on ebay. It's a great looking coin, but the spots of lighter copper color on the rims, especially the reverse, made me think that it had been cleaned and has now retoned.
I too agree. This coin looks like it has been cleaned to a bright red/orange .... And is still in the process of toning back to brown. If it ever does get back to brown.
All though I think the coin looks very nice I also believe that it's been touched up a bit. Any 'pure' large cent that old should be a deep brown by now; any that look that new have had some work done on them. I still think it would be a fine coin for my collection, but I wouldn't have bid much more than $20 for it. (PS: I'm "frugal", not "cheap") :)
Thanks for the responses. I'm glad I picked up that it had been cleaned. I had bid on the coin, but dropped out when I took a closer look and became suspicious.
