Poll Question
An ongoing discussion at our coin shop is how professionally slabbed & graded Morgans often are not affected by fluctuating silver prices. Which Morgan silver dollars do you prefer to add to your collection?

MS-Graded-Historic-Morgan-Silver-Dollars-Vs-Raw?

Poll Choices
Only professionally graded MS - Low mintage
Only professionally graded MS - Any date/MM
Only professionally graded - Any grade
 Only ungraded/raw
 A mix of graded/raw
I don't like US silver dollars

Im a morgan collector first and foremost and I can say that I collect them all. In slabs, raw, ms to lowball and by VAM. Heck, even jewelry pieces of 1881s because its my birthyear but everyone knows my main passion is toners be them monsters or targets, end rolls or unique patterns. What I'm getting at here is that with morgans in particular there are Sooooo many ways to collect them why limit yourself.

So to answer your poll I would pick all but the last

As an investment I now only buy graded coins common or rare in uncirculated or near unc grades. Easier to store.....protected from the environment and no one can second guess authenticity

I like the morgan series, but being a YN and all I dont have a ton of money. Also, when I do get a large sum of $$ half of it goes to my other hobby (HO scale trains)...

I voted for Any Morgan dollar, because BUY THE COIN NOT THE SLAB!

I also like Morgan's. Raw or slabbed they are all good.

For me the trick is to not over pay for them.

For me it's pretty simple. If I like the 'coin' I buy the coin. Whether it's in a holder or raw, as long as I follow my instincts and knowledge on authenticity and I like the coin that's what I buy. I have a mix in my collection.

For most issues, Morgans are so common in 64 and below that a slab shouldn't add anything to a raw coin. The whole point of being a numismatist is to become skilled enough not to need a slab, so my personal preference runs to raw coins.

As BiggFredd so wisely said, what need is there for 300,000 coins in MS63 slabs (literally - NGC and PCGS have 320,000 1881-S's between them, and over 100k in MS64) when the issue is available all the way to MS69?

Hence, my new sig. I am calling on all Morgan collectors to crack the slabs of all common issues/grades so future fans can hold them raw in hand.

I am not realy a big fan of the Morgan dollar.

Okay, okay. put the noose away! It is not the coin's fault.
I have most of the easy ones in MS 63-65 in a Dansco. Sure, they're pretty and all, but they were never needed or wanted. They were just a politicians game so his friend could sell his silver to the government. They were hoarded by everyone from the US govt. to Uncle Joe's cousin's nephew. They have been promoted more than any other US coin. Everyone wants them because they have been told they are rare and hard to find, blah, blah, blah. I do not think I have bought one for over 12 years.

I don't think so!

Anyway, I don't like collecting Morgan dollars because I don't have that big of a budget and I know I don't have the patience to wait!

As a brand new collector that's totally new to the game, I should probably be buying slabbed Morgans because I can't distinguish between a ms61 or ms64. I'm going to a side of the road coin man in the morning, he has several ungraded Carson City Morgans I'll be looking at. A couple of them were priced fairly high last time I was down here, just under a grand I believe. I brought a grand in cash with me today so there's a good chance I'll have a new CC Morgan tomorrow.

I love all Morgan dollars but as an investment, you should have graded coins... That's fact.
