I've gotten a number of them that were loose. I stopped at one bank and she had $11 loose - I think there were 7 40%. I went to one bank and asked for halves. She said she had one. As she was handing it to me she pointed out to me that it was silver. It was a '64. One day a teller mentioned how shiney some were as he was handing me about $5 worth. I picked up 4 (maybe 5) proofs from him. Boxed, rolled, or loose - they might be there, they might not.

Just got back to the office with A FRESH BATCH OF "LOOSE" HALVES !! $300.00 AGAIN !
This time though they seemed a little irratated at the notion and I overheard them talking while they were counting out my halves. They said "Is this the same guy who got $300.00 yesterday ? Did he bring back that $300.00 ? He's a coin collector do you think ? Silver ones huh ? hmmmmmm...... yeah my brother collects them too. I wonder how many will be in here ?
I'm thinking...... crap ! Now everybody and their "brother" will be buying these and looking through them ! And worse yet........ IS SHE TAKING OUT THE SILVER ONES RIGHT NOW OUT OF MY PILE ?!?
It took them a looooooonnnnng time to count out my $300.00 too.

see, that alone would keep me from going to that bank again. I just can't stand the stare you get when a simple request aggravates a teller. Everyone I've dealt w/ at BOA is very helpful, and even inquires as to why I get them...but they don't have to count them by hand...they just go get the box out of the vault.

Thomas....
Yeah....it made me feel a little embarrased, but if I keep producing silver ....... I'm going to continue to go there...... don't know why they're all loose, but oh well !
I buy them from "that" bank and then take the ones I've looked through over to "MY" bank (where they love me !) My bank has three branches in town and they don't have them or I've looked through what they do have.......so that's why I just went to any old bank and asked ....... hey it's working !

I can't help but nothice that there are a TON of people hunting for silver in half dollar rolls. Is this something that you're doing for resale/profit, or because you're speculating that silver prices will rise sharply in the near future?

I got the impression that most people were just flipping them for profit, but I don't understand how the payoff is worth the time investment. Let's take the most recent post as an example. This was apparently a very good group of 300 coins and one 90% and four 40% were found . That's about $16 silver value, so the profit is around $13.50. That $13.50 probably has at least a two hour time investment, between driving to the bank to get the coins, driving home with them, sorting them out, returning them to the bank, and driving home. Then there's also the cost of gas to and from the bank. By the time all is said and done, it's basically slave wages.

So what part of this am I not understanding? I just can't fathom how it's profitable. I totally understand if it's just a hobby and the thrill of the hunt, but I'm not sure I see it as being profitable.

I do it totally for the thrill of the hunt. Kinda like fishing as well which I like to do.....sure you can go to the grocery store and buy fish already fileted for the table....OR...you can spend $100 in gas driving my truck/boat to the coast and just catching one fish makes it all worthwhile for me.

I would say it is the thrill of the hunt. I have not done it in a while, but I did it in the past. It was very easy when I was dating a bank teller in the 90's!

IMHO, if you enjoy it as a part of the hobby, then it's not really labour that has a cost associated with it. I would also add that for it to be really profitable, it would have to be a long-term investment where one cashed in when the silver price peaked. Just my $.50 worth!

Even if I lived in the bank, it wouldn't be worth it to me for profit...takes an hour to sort through the 300 coins for $13.50...that's not good enough wages for me. LOL

I definitely understand the thrill of the hunt though. I was just confused because it seemed like people were doing this for profit, rather than for fun/entertainment.

As for expenses, I may order a box, but I ONLY go get it if I have a check to cash or another reason to visit the bank...i won't make special trips...same for depositing.

Mahgobbi........
I'm sort of new to "silver hunting" .......... but i'll explain it like this.
It's like when you see your first Grizzly bear in the wild.......NOT at a zoo......but in the wilderness. (i experienced that half a dozen times).
It changes your soul to see something special and rare and uncommon.
It's like an easter egg hunt.....those with the careful eye will get the most candy.
Plus....it's just fun ! It's not tedious or costly. And if I can amass a "pile" of silver 30 years from now......mmmmmmmmm These coins ARE ALSO COLLECTABLE ! And really that's reason enough for what I consider very little effort...... We all go to banks anyway......why not grab extra coins while your there.... for even money !
