My question is how do you find banks that actually have Half rolls? I have been to 4 different banks in my area already (for work) and none seem to have any rolls. Do you have to request them to order some?

Eaglefoot: make sure you take those coins your are finished with back to a DIFFERENT bank branch.
Mint_marq: You have to persevere. I don't make special trips to the bank just to get halves. If I'm there for another reason, I always ask and the answer about 75% of the time is no. I do rotate different branches I go to, because my sense is that not a lot of people bring in halves to the bank. Sometimes I come away with under $10 loose and sometimes I get hundreds of dollars in halves.
Mah: Thrill of the hunt and not all of us are making > $13.50 an hour. I enjoy the hobby and yes, I'll lose an hour searching, but so what. The hour is my time- hobby time. And I drive a gas efficient vehicle- 50 MPG, so that doesn't affect me too much.

I've recently started searching rolls of half dollars. Initially this was to fill the holes in my collection or to upgrade existing coins. It worked pretty well. I've been through a little over $600 so far and I have pretty much all the circulation strikes in XF or better - most are AU/BU. Some of these are also hard to find semi-keys (see mycrob's thread on JFK halves from circulation) like 1978D and 1979D. But there is also a treasure hunt factor involved. The thought of finding silver worth over 4X face value (for the 40%) is cool. In my first box of $500 I found just under 200 of these. I took them to my local coin shop, cashed them in at $2.25 each, and bought a bunch of other coins. Finding proofs or halves not released into circulation (70, 87, post 2001) is also cool. I've had less luck with this, but have managed to find a couple 2006P. I have one more box ordered just to see if my beginner's luck will hold out. If I get even close to 200 40% silver, I will probably continue roll searching. Ultimately this source of extra income will dry up and my wife will start nagging me about how much I spend on coins . In the mean time, I consider it free money (I walk to and from the bank with the boxes and I figure I'm saving money on not joining a gym) for my hobby.

Now if I could find 200 silver coins in every box of 1,000 coins I'd quit my job and roll hunt for a living!

Mycrob..... Yes, I do take them to a different bank ! My banks are all tapped out and don't look to be getting anymore anytime soon, so I just visited another bank and then I take the ones I've searched through to "my" bank. My goal is to "tap out" this new bank I've found ! And then start all over with somewhere else.......so far they haven't run out. Mint Marq.... I'm not sure if they'd take a request to order some from the Federal Reserve. Because they'd have to "buy" them and they have no use for them. But it does happen that they do from time to time. Any bank could get a fresh supply of them in at any time. There are A LOT of banks in my town of 130,000 people and a lot of little towns around too and suburbs etc. etc........... so this could take me years to "tap out" everybody of their silver !! Ha Ha Just keep asking different banks and keep at it......you'll score eventually

carl - You say you held the bicentennial quarters for well over 30 years, which means you must have just cashed them in within the past few months. I know it's not the premium you were originally banking on, but rolls of bicentennial quarters in BU condition sell for 2-3 times face on ebay. Definitely would have been better than returning them to the bank! Sorry I'm not an ebay person. I don't know how to use it, don't want to learn either. I'm way to old for new stuff. I go to coin shows and that is about as much as I want to get involved in at my age. And yes it was pretty recent we dumped them all.

I've said this before man times. Most banks DO have rolls of halves. The problem is since they are not commonly used they are in the main vault. For a person they don't know asking for them they usually say we don't have any. In order for them to get you some, they would have to lock up everything, if not authorized to enter the vault, go find someone to do this, exchange the halves for bills, usually do some accompaning paper work, return to their station, now give you your rolls of halves. Not all the people in line ticked off at your for holding up everything. No easier to say we don't have any. I usually get from 2 to 10 rolls every few weeks. Not long ago I went to the same bank I usually go to but a new teller was the one I got. I asked for halves and was told they didn't have any. I went back that afternoon when the bank was less crowded and made sure I got a teller that knew me. I ended up with 10 rolls of the halves they didn't have. I only go through them for better grades than the ones in my albums. If none better they all are used for tips, entrance fees at flea markets, etc. So if you find some Silver ones it's due to people like me that are to old to attempt to hoard Silver.

RE-RE-RE UPDATE ! (or something!) I just left the bank that I've been getting the $300.00 in halves from......... I got my $288.00 worth of them....... AND NOW THEY'RE OUT ! NO MORE IN THE VAULT (or at least thats what they said anyway)(props to CARL) So.....that quickly I now have to find another bank to look for silver halves. I'll look through these, then take them to my bank and next week or so start looking for a new "silver mine" !! Hope I find 4 or 5 more !!

I think all my branches are tapped out of halves. My first order of $1000 halves got moved back to next week now. I'm so disappointed, as I was hoping to go through them this weekend.
Patrick: I really doubt you will get 200 40% silver again in a box, but I hope you do. That was amazing. Most of the folks are saying 5, 6, 7 maybe up to 10 per $500 box.

I have to request that the bank order half dollars for me, and they get $1000.00 each order, (two boxes). Loose halves, scarce! My (vault) teller saves every one that comes in, and puts them in a small envelope with my name on it. I "hit the bank once a week, and never leave without a box of cents, or quarters, sometimes with both. I have even bought the deposits from merchants, that are not collectors. I have a big batch of rolls of dimes, and nickels that were in the last one, ($469.00). One of these days, I'll fill up some holes in the albums. Silver in the half dollars is less than one coin per bos! I do find the non circulatred dates, (2003-date) now and then. Dick

Eaglefoot, I don't mean no disrespect but...... reading about your adventures over the last few days made ME sick. What I would have done in your situation while getting the $300 I would have asked "how much more do you have"? I understand you only had $300 to play with but I wouldn't have went back till I had enough to buy them all. You keep going back, they start thinking these must really be good maybe I should check these- if there were any Bens or Walkers in that bag they were scalped while being counted. When I started out I had nothing hardly, payday was coming and I ordered boxes that my paycheck would cover, searched the coins, dumped and paid my bills. I found that I was much more frugal with my money than I had been before and the next payday came and I done the same thing- as time went on my stash grew and I was able to sell some 40% for more hunting money added to what I saved. Tomarrow I will dump tonights halves, 4 boxes and go pickup 6 more. I do have a bank that I go to once a month that always has to recount the bag even though I say I trust the count and I always get robbed of the Bens and anything older- I continue to go there because I get alot of 40%'s and even 64's. Like I said, don't mean no disrespect, just thought you needed some constructive criticism. You done good but I bet you lost some. HH Mark

These Kennedy half threads are very interesting. I am going to go to my bank tomorrow and see if they have any rolls available. I do happen to have one roll so I looked through it. I found a 2005 P. Am I too understand that this was a NIFC Half meaning it was originally in a mint set? Should I keep this Kennedy half or just put it back in the roll? Thanks
