Picked up this half dollar. Has no reeding or evidence of ever being reeded on the edge. The edge is pictured surrounding the coin in the pictures. Is this a fairly common error or unheard of. Any advice would help. Not sure what the value is. -Thanks!
I think you have filed rims where the silver from the reeding was shaved off. In this case it is not an error coin it is a damaged coin. It has VF Details and would make a nice album coin
See how there is a raised lip around the outermost part of the rim? That was caused by someone beating the edge of the coin with a hammer, spoon, etc. just PMD.
Based on the appearance of the rim, it is obvious that the coin was struck in a collar. The US Mint did not use any half-dollar sized plain edge collars so it is impossible for it to have been minted without reeding. The most likely explanation was mentioned by BH1964, silver shaving was a somewhat profitable venture in the 1800s.
I think it looks more like a "spooning" job that didn't get very far. The edge looks unusually broad. It isn't rounded like and out of collar strike and the diameter of the coin looks normal so I would discount the idea of a broadstrike.
