I have looked up this VAM before on here, and I see a lot of words and a lot of pictures and no short summary. a term should have a definition not a Clancy novel to explain it.
Shadz, why have your recent postings been so snide and snarky that they're bordering on rude. Have you always been this way or am I just noticing now? Come on man, pills don't act this way!
GIGO, Cascade. Stands for Garbage In, Garbage Out. been a lot of annoying garbage on here lately, some people telling others how to collect, and its just gone over the line for me. People have forgotten why coin collecting began. Not coin hoarding like pirates, kings ripping off people for tax money, etc. Coin Collecting, was something not for the rich. Money collecting was for the rich. Now it seems something as simple as coin collecting is filled with the ONETRUEWAYISM of just about every other hobby, where people are hellbent on telling others they are doing it wrong. Let people enjoy their thing and go enjoy yours, I say.
Coin Collecting began when the common man found that he too could have something lasting and nice to have for his lifetime that he could afford. EVERYONE could share in it. Whitman and others starting making collection archive products because the common man was doing it, not because there needed museum archival quality product for the rich that could go buy every coin they ever wanted. Dansco obviously came later, but you lok at most products for collecting sets and are they the cabinets like in the "Supplies" forum that are expensive in and of themselves? No, because they weren't made for Steve Martin so Adam Baldwin could rob him of his coins in that little town, they were made and priced for lower income people to enjoy a simply hobby. One they could do with their pocket change.
Not everyone is rich enough to go buy 1000 Morgans to look for varieties. Heck some people can't even get bag of large dollars! Others can't even get rolls and only have what change comes to their pockets as a source to collect from.
So the way these people with lesser options to acquire coins for collections because they cannot afford to just buy 3 of everything the US Mint offers in proof uncirculated quality, has highly offended me! People collect what they want/can, how they can, for the reasons they collect. Why can that not just be accepted by everyone? Why must it be done the ONETRUEWAY?
If you don't like how someone else collects do you think them a lesser collector? Do you think they don't have a right to collect coins because they don't have the funds to do it the "rich persons" way? Can these people just not say "Hey, those people are enjoying themselves and not hurting me; so maybe I should just move on and keep my mouth shut?" Or is it as I surmised earlier, that with less roll-hunters then the coin dealers would have higher profits because they would be the ONLY resource for people to get coins unless they have enormous amounts of pocket change to sort through? That is after all roll-hunting is. Some roll-hunting is doing harm, but not all.
Maybe a sticky in the forum about Coin Roll Hunting Ethics, would help be a place to suss out what actions are the problem and what are not and help curtail bad habits of roll hunters that visit here so that it works better for all, INCLUDING the banks?
Some people have just gone over a line being unfriendly, let alone "family friendly" that makes me fear for the future of coin collecting in general. Imagine if these attitudes are held and expressed OUTSIDE of these forums. Do dealers tell people they shouldn't check pocket change? Is this even ethical for the dealer to do? Who is benefiting more the dealer or the coin collectors?
Maybe, just maybe, being more open and receptive to other types of collectors of your chosen collection item, might strengthen the hobby. While the ONETRUEWAYISM can only serve to destroy it.
Shadz, I like your passion! One thing, not saying the only thing I agree on is why some people seem to like to comment on CRHing being a waste of time. How can a hobby be a waste of time?.
I have a washer, a button, A clip piece from a pen, a Mickey big mouth pull tab, and etc. in 2X2s in my collection. That's one of my hobbies, driving them batty some day. The one that looks like it has diamonds in it, has diamonds in it.
