Education: What's Up With This 1881-S Morgan Dollar?

It has a bizarre surface that I've not seen on Morgans, and the reverse looks nearly like it has a lightning strike going on above the eagle's head. Can someone please educate me on what's going on here? Is this a late die state with the heavy flow lines? Is the "lightning" a die defect, or evidence of a past dip that was not completely rinsed? CartwheelCollector Valued Member United States 403 Posts	Posted 09/24/2015 12:05 am It does appear to be later die state, and appears to have evidence of not necessarily a dip, but of some surface contaminant that was never rinsed off properly. kdrcoinzz Valued Member United States 281 Posts	Posted 09/24/2015 06:39 am maybe a planchet defect of some kind? to get all those lines..it has some of the biggest pullaway toning ive ever seen. normally its only on one side and only a few spots, this has it on both sides, all letters and stars. super nice coin btw!
