Nice to see so many coins starting to pop up, hope the trend continues.

I really prefer the look of well circulated Morgans over MS examples. Glad this thread is still trucking along.

If we are all out of 1882, we can take 1881 now.

I'm out...only one more to go. The 1883 V was my oldest CRH find, but I have a second metal detecting find to post. And that one is my last contribution (coin-wise) unless something comes up in the last $20 I'm searching. I can only hope!

I just saw this thread and have been reading with interest. Rackster's "1923" Buffalo posted https://goccf.com/t/243046&whichpage=29#2188870 is not a 1923- it is a 1921. The 1921 has three lines coming up where the hair is bundled- it is diagnostic for the 21.

My oldest coin from circulation is a 1907 Indian Head cent. So you guys blew past that already. I'm amazed at how many pre-1900 coins people have found- truly remarkable!

Nice catch, though.

I see the three splits you are talking about. I took a look and in hand it looks too wide to be a 1 but the pickled 1923 I have does not have the splits. So it must be a 1. That's too bad; one more slot opens up.

It could be worse. I am not really sure how at this time, but it could. Good luck with the hunt.

Quote: but I have a second metal detecting find to post. I have read many of the posts on the Metal Detecting forum and have considered buying a detector. I have seen them for sale on Craig's (buyer beware) and of course local stores. Looks like $200+ is the starting number for a better detector. Do you use yours a lot or just now and then? I live in an older development and know which parts of town are older but getting permission to search someone's property is something I'm not all that comfortable with. Using a MD in the park, on a beach... is less likely to require permission. Where do you use yours most of the time? Oh for the days when there were vending machines for cig's, milk and whatever all over town. Found many a coin including a silver dollar by looking under them and on the ground nearby, metal detector not required. Hopefully the "we need 1878" doesn't happen till after the holiday, no Net access this weekend for me. I did upload the post as a draft.
