Still learning how to use my new enlarger lens. This coin is pretty worn so not much detail, even with a third light to highlight the date and raised surface area.

Out of a MWR. No cents variety.

Nice find mountainman 2, really clean, great details for an 1883 V.

I'll take a V find anytime, but I'd love to jump back just one more series. That would be awesome!!

Nice close to the V nickel series!

I know that some members have found Shield nickels in CWRs, but they were either smaller than modern nickels, or else lighter, so they would not sort through any precision counting machine. I think we are going to have to rely mostly on IHCs to get us back once we hit the 1870s

Only if they're extremely worn or damaged. The size and weight of the nickel has stayed the same since 1866 (20.5 mm, 5 g).

I'm so excited! I'm back in this post. Just tonight, about two hours ago, I was opening nickel rolls with my 9 year old son Thomas and I found this, and then he shouted, "NO CENTS!!". (He has been studying the Red Book, and he knew that it was 1883 without turning it over). So, I have joined him in our newly-formed V nickel club, as he found a 1907 nickel (posted upthread) a few months ago. He is aware of this thread, and asked what day we are on. 1883! So here it is:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?---CRH-Edition!-We-Need--1872-

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?---CRH-Edition!-We-Need--1872-

So then he ran off and told me not to look as he worked on something, and then produced this:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?---CRH-Edition!-We-Need--1872-

Note the hilarious double-die joke for "Dad".

YNC - with CENTS.

I found a really worn 1887 that because of the nearly smooth surface, I thought I had a Shield for a few seconds. That or a slug.

Congrats to both of you!

I'm hoping to some shields here soon, and hopefully some Seated coins.
