I bought both the 1873 3¢ Silver and the 1873 2¢ coins some years back because of their very low proof-only mintage of 600 coins each. My 1914 proof Barber half is also low-mintage, either 380 pieces (says Stacks and the Red Book) or 610 pieces (per CoinFacts.com). I thought all three of these coins were undervalued when I purchased them and they seem to be undervalued still. They haven't appreciated nearly as much as many higher-mintage keys, such as the 1909-S VDB and 1955 double die cents and the 1916-D Mercury dime.  Many new collectors are surprised to learn that really old coins aren't necessarily expensive. Eventually they also learn that a low-mintage coin is not always worth more than coins that were made in much greater quantities.  |

Several that I own of interest... 1856 Flying Eagle - not a regular issue, but a pattern Snow-3 (Mint State) mintage ~758 (proof mintage is considered ~1500) 1872 2cent - regular issue - mintage 65,000 1936 proof set (1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c) mintage 3,837 sets possible (quarter mintage 3,837) 1803 1/2 cent - mintage 92,000 1875 Indian Head cent proof - mintage 700 Everyone seems to have some very nice examples. |

Don't laugh, I'm a noob, but I did find a 1970 S Kennedy half in a box a long time ago! I was so exstatic, my g/f thought I was and still am a nutt! I called her immediately when I found it, and she thought that was funny. I think there were around 3,000,000 or so minted. This one is in great shape too! |

Sorry to pile-on to this old topic, but I bought my first <100,000 coin! I purchased a 1936 Bridgeport Commemorative in Long Beach --> 25,015 minted. What a fun experience!

Hard to locate, but not all that expensive considering the low mintage - less than 2x melt for the 72s and 74s, 3x melt for the 1844.

1988 proof UK silver pound : 50,000 For U.S. (kinda) 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii quarter ( Charles Barber design) 242,600 (247,000 of the 500,000 were melted) Wow, even my 1798 cent has a mintage over 1 million. |

Off the top of my head, I have the 1997 Botanic Gardens Jefferson Matte Nickel 25,000 mintage.
