A friend of mine tipped me off to a coin auction that was happening today fairly local. I left work early (it's good to be the boss) and headed over. There was around 350 lots ranging from proof/mint sets to early coppers to home shopping network gold plated State Quarters. There wasn't a lot of bidders so I had high hopes of picking up some decent items cheaply. Once the auction started That's when the craziness started to happen. There were $100 coins selling for $20 and $20 coins selling for $100. There was a overly polished 1917 type 2 Standing Liberty quarter that should have been $40 tops, it sold for $250. The thing wasn't graded it wasn't a full head it was a details XF.  I watched for a while before anything I really wanted went up for bid. The first thing that came up was a BU roll of 1963D dimes. Graysheet is $75 and they regularly sell on ebay in the $100 range. The auctioneer started the bid at $100, then $75 I was wondering if I should bid and walk or wait. Next thing I know he has a $40 bid and I jump in. A few bids later the dimes were mine for $62.00. This gave me hope that the room was cheap or broke. I think cheap won out as people were buying a lot of items, but the items were all in the $15-$25 range. I decided after this discovery I was going to go after the higher end stuff and hope I had judged the room correctly. When it was all said and done I left with this.  |

Those are some nice additions. It does sound as though you did a good job at reading the room.

Looks like a good score. You gonna post your bust dollar in grading section?
I do love the gold half eagle. Hope you are happy with everything!

The half eagle looks good next to his little brother the quarter eagle I have it sitting next to. I can probably post up the bust dollar sometime soon. I actually have a free moment right now and I'm going through a pile of coins and currency that's been building up.
Definitely happy with the purchases. Now I have to sell some other stuff to get some money back.

That off center looks to have been in that holder some 30 years. I love me a good small auction that isn't simultaneously online. I'm very good at psycing out other buyers and getting what I want. Sounds like you're more of an ambush buyer. Boy a day can take a left turn quick can't it  |

If I would have had to pulled out the big guns I would have, but when people were having a hard time spending $100 it's wasn't necessary. After talking with the auctioneer they have a monthly auction and they average around 300 coins per auction.
The off center cent was on a whim it was cheap, so why not? It's definitely been locked away for awhile. I'm gonna pull it out and get it into a new 2x2 because I'm not sure what the one it's in is made of. It's crunchy.

Congrats! The auction houses in my area only carry lower end coins (under $50) so not much slips through the cracks. I've gotten a few coin deals at auctions in the past but they are few and far between. Most auctioneers know that their target audience of bidders can't/won't pay up for higher end material so they keep it to cheap junk and damaged type coins which seem to sell well.
Looks like you got a nice assortment of goodies.

Nice pick ups! I attended a coin auction like that once myself. Seven bidders total. My only mistake was not aking enough cash with me as I though $700 would have been more than enough.
